Is SEO dead now that everyone's using ChatGPT?

I get this question a lot,

Is SEO dead now that everyone's using ChatGPT?

And I understand why. AI tools are everywhere, the gurus are telling everyone that social media is the only way to market your services, Google keeps changing, and it feels like the rules are shifting faster than anyone can keep up with.

So here's my straight answer: SEO is not dead. But the way some people were doing it is.

AI overviews, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, all of these are changing how people find information, that part is true.

But here's what surprises most people when I tell them: those AI summaries you see at the top of Google search results are pulled from well-optimized, authoritative content.

AKA websites that actually say something specific and useful.

Meaning if your website has with real answers, real depth, real personality, you won't just survive the AI era, you'll get featured in it. More visibility, more credibility, more clients finding you.

Here's what doesn't survive:

  • Generic, say-nothing content published just to tick a box on your to-do list.
  • Copy-pasted AI blog posts with no point of view, no specific detail, no voice.
  • Content written to game an algorithm that no longer works the way it used to.

If you've been thinking "I'll just use ChatGPT to write a blog post a week and hit publish", I'd suggest reconsidering, because you might as well no post anything, you'd do yourself a favor.

And no, AI isn't bad per se, I use it too, but because an empty article with no depth is worse than no article at all (especially if your domain name is new).

Bad SEO content dies quietly, good SEO content works for you harder than ever.

The sites that are going to keep growing are the ones that show up, speak clearly, and actually answer what their people are searching for. That's it, that's the whole game.

If you want the full breakdown of how long SEO actually takes to bring in clients and what affects your results, I wrote a detailed blog post about it this week. Worth a read if you've ever wondered whether you're on the right track or just wasting your time.
