Turning 40: Reflections on a decade of parenthood + work

🚼💌A parent-friendly note from Amy, amidst the Black Friday noise: No special codes, instructions or gimmicks...just a good old-fashioned life and business update

This past weekend, I celebrated making it to my 40s not something I take for granted after a near death experience at 37 and decades of winging it in adulthood, parenthood and business.

Real footage of a bada$$, soft hearted Queen in her natural habitat wishing for world peace, #mixingbabiesandbusiness magic, vitality, future memories and adventures with loved ones and strangers turned friends...

Like most things career and professional development wise (the title, the stage, the microphone, the opportunity, the invitation, the promotion, the raise, the sales call), if you don't make the ASK (ie: please call me Queen Amy when singing), you may not receive what you're looking for (ie: a chorus of your minions enthusiastically waiting for their slice of cake from your favourite local bakery).

I spent the lead up to this moment:

  • exhibiting at a holiday craft market (I make ceramics and art prints on the side) before a surprise dinner with friends and family on Saturday evening, which I thought would be my partner's work Christmas party!
  • special solo breakfast with our middle kid while we skipped the older bro's hockey tournament, then lounging in my gingerbread PJs by the fire all day watching the Jonas Brothers new Christmas movie with the kids on Sunday
  • batch baking 150+ biccies for future gifts, receiving surprise packages and messages from people I've known and loved over the past two decades in different countries, having a 1:1 lunch with my Dad (who turns 70 soon!), doing school pickup, then an early night with the family at the local arena for U11 hockey practice, followed by this song, cake and celebration on Monday

Very grateful for it all, I tried my best to settle into and bask in the joy without doing, performing, giving, functioning, producing.

As I get older, I'm getting better at flexing my receiving muscles, being present and simply existing in the moment.

But I was still taken aback by how despite not feeling like my former self over the past two years, I was still the recipient of such care, attention and affection.

What I've learned: Let people know what you want/need/how they can help/work with you. Make the ask. Leave space between the unknown. Create room to receive. When support arrives, get comfortable with saying yes.

⌛Let's go back in time

Call me old fashioned but I got a bit nostalgic this week remembering everything we've been through as a family (of now five) over the past 10 years and multiple relocations.

This is my growth mindset timeline, messy progress and all ⬇️

As I prepare to wrap up this year, I can't help but reflect on all of the ways the small moments behind the scenes, self-trust, intuition, creative practices and adaptability, has had on my capacity to show up, speak up and use unconventional methods to make gradual progress and get extraordinary results.

Most importantly, being able to give it a go, fail forward and then stick with things, has helped create change in physical spaces, shift people's perspectives and give others tools, which they can adapt to suit their family's needs, long after I am present with them.

Qs for you: Reply to this email, comment on the social posts or send me a DM (I read and reply to each response myself).

  • What has your growth journey looked like over the past 5-10 years?
  • How can you make it easier for yourself to be supported when doing hard things?
  • What's the best that could happen if you dared to have the audacity to show up as you are?

✨️I'm powered by rituals, inner work and embodied action

While I don't have any Black Friday sales or bundles for you, I do have a timely reminder about the accessible offering I've put together for parents to celebrate five years of the Mixing Babies And Business Podcast in 2025.

This year-long virtual container and resource has been my way of continuing to share the behind-the-scenes practices, routines, behaviour change and energy management I refer to over and over again.

These are the intuitive exercises, rituals and actions I've taken to get the results I have experienced to date as a parent of three young kids, like:

  • Persuading corporate organizations to let me host pop-up business events and experiences in their spaces for caregivers and their families
  • Showing up as a parent live online via social media or in person at corporate events in formal attire and/or my regular mum wardrobe, while being grounded and calm enough to bring my kids along without adult or kid meltdowns happening (on repeat)
  • Going with the flow enough to enjoy myself while I'm doing unconventional things, advocating for parents and feeling safe to speak on the fly when the mic or opportunities are passed to me
  • Public speaking opportunities (sometimes with our kids!), successful engagements and five-star reviews from people in leadership roles and their corporate audiences, IRL, hybrid and online
  • Requests to participate in interviews, mentorship, advisory, government relations roundtables and surprise opportunities, like private invitations to the House of Commons to meet 1:1 with multiple Members of Parliament (during school hours of course) after chatting with them at a dinner event
  • Landing flexible and remote client engagements and employee contracts, delivering the work and getting repeat requests, while doing so around pregnancies, postpartum and school age kid seasons of parenthood

You can still get in for only $25 CAD before it's rolled into an updated community offering at a higher price point, at the end of this year. Sign up to listen to, read or download 11 of the 12 private podcast episodes and digital resources on demand before the final drop on December 25th, 2025.

Here's to asking for what you want, being open to receive and making progress in the micro moments (even AND especially if it's messy),
