[Event Alert] Public Speaking With Kids – Have You Tried It?

Feb 21, 2023 10:10 pm

A PERSONAL NOTE  FROM ME (AMY):

✨📝 I'm back from a self-imposed winter break, with some #publicspeakingwithkids inspo 📢

Stay tuned for this Friday's curated newsletter of parent-friendly business news, events and opportunities, but first:

⏰ Join me on Thursday, February 23rd at 10 a.m. ET for a FREE online workshop hosted by WE-CAN Project at Queen's University, where I'll be covering how I've presented, pitched and hosted keynotes, panels, meetings, workshops, webinars, meetups, podcast interviews over the past almost seven years alongside / around my three kids.

Feb 23: Online Workshop

😬 Some people have called my kids "props" when I've done public speaking engagements, pitches or meetings with them. Sigh.

I never corrected them but I would wonder:

  • 💰 Do they assume everyone has access to flexible, quality, affordable childcare?
  • ⏳️ Do they know how hard it is to get out of the door, let alone arrive at the venue to be present with kid(s)?
  • 👀 Do they think, like a stage prop, I can neatly put this child away somewhere convenient and only "use" it to prove a point?

As a parent...if you've ever wondered how you can show up as you are in "professional" environments focused on the needs of adult humans, while you are tending to the needs of preschool or school age humans, then perhaps you would like to join the FREE Baby In The Boardroom: Pitching & Presenting With Kids [Online Workshop] this Thursday, hosted by the WE-CAN Project at Queen's University.

It's 90 minutes, online and available via a free Eventbrite RSVP - I understand it will be difficult to tune in for the whole time if you have kid(s) at home and it's looking like it could be a snow day here in Ottawa where I'll be presenting from BUT it will have transcription, be recorded, resources and inspiration will be provided and I'll do my best to answer any of your questions. Those which I can't get to, I will follow up with afterwards.

🚼 Because after speaking in public and business settings alongside my kids as babies and toddlers, I have learned a few things.

I would like to share them with anyone seeking to do the same or looking for strategies to make it easier the next time around!

📢⚠️ And if this session isn't for you but you've read this far, spread the word! In future, if you're on the receiving end of a parent speaking or pitching alongside their kids, please take a moment to smile, be present, listen and refrain from asking them if their child(ren) are indeed, props or part of their marketing strategy. 🚨

Photo: Taken at Impact Hub Ottawa when I spoke at the launch of the Eastern Ontario branch of the Women Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub (WEKH) in June 2019, while babywearing our one-year-old son, because the event was held after 6 p.m. and I didn't want to say no to the opportunity. I also advised Impact Hub Ottawa on providing pop-up childcare which our other son, who was three at the time, tested out during my talk.

The Mixing Babies And Business™ Podcast is celebrating three years in 2023! 🎉

The end of this past year marked 62 mini episodes of the Mixing Babies And Business™ Podcast across podcast streaming platforms! 🔊

Season 5 plans are currently underway – thank you for your feedback, reviews, support and for listening. Every bit helps and I'm planning to reach more parents with these interviews over the coming year.

Here is a lovely post from Kiri Bird via LinkedIn which caught me by surprise in December and reminded me in the midst of a hard season of parenting (while carving out time to work on my own business in between freelancing for others during the lead up to the holidays), these stories and parenting truths aren't always shared in mainstream society or media but need to be heard.
