👀 A parent-friendly business note from Amy...
BTS: Hosting a virtual corporate workshop from home during school hours
Last week, I hopped online to speak about navigating hybrid work environments as a parent, a topic I've been sharing strategies, practices and lived experiences from since I started freelancing remotely in 2014...
💻🌏 But I'm no longer living the laptop-work-from-wherever-digital-nomad lifestyle.
🚸🎒👟 These days it's more about creative sprints during school hours, wearing supportive sneakers and varying my desk setup to accommodate TBI/whiplash and other flare ups while keeping the tech away from kids who want to touch all the things!
Last week it looked like:
✨️ Imperfect office / not completely tidy
✨️ Standing desk setup as I have to vary my sitting / standing due to injuries (thanks for the tips Ontario Brain Injury Association)
✨️ Mic stand book stack ft. art, design, nature + magic supplied by kids bookshelves and Ottawa Public Library loans
✨️ Wearing cozy clothes as I wait for surgery
✨️ Everything in the immediate view behind me tidied as a backdrop
✨️ Messy play area adjacent to where I'm hosting (our three-year-old toddler will tear this apart in under three minutes flat, he is a mini hurricane in human form)
✨️ Hard stop time for school pick up
✨️ Successfully delivered session, progress over perfection
👀 Anything special you have going on for your work space these days?
💬 Feedback and Q&A from last week's workshop was done privately as it was an internal session but attendees thanked me for validating their own lived experiences as parents, providing practical tips, making them feel seen and heard.
It reminded me of the importance of putting myself out there (even more), sharing what it's really like (behind the scenes) and continuing to speak about things I have worked at, tested and experimented with (on repeat).
I've spoken on this topic in particular for over FIVE YEARS. In many different ways, formats, to different audiences, IRL, virtually and hybrid.
The content is based on what I've done as a freelancer, contractor, remote worker and now parent of three kids. And it still works.
Ways to keep this momentum going:
- If you'd like to attend a future virtual session as a parent: Join me next week on Tuesday, May 13th at 12 PM (ET) to learn about how to 'Show Up (With Your Kids)'
- I'm open to virtual speaking engagements in Q3 and Q4 (July–December 2025). Read about the key topics I deliver sessions on and testimonials on my website and book a call to explore your options or pass this email along to someone you know who may want to book me as a speaker.
Other parent-friendly PD for you:
🎬🎙Listen back to my previous livestreams for practical tips and my personal stories on working with what you have when doing public speaking!
Over the past month, I've covered audience Q&A prep, speaking about 'unconventional' things, exploring how you want your audience to feel, sharing your own lived experiences.
Next up: I'll share some of the rituals and preparation I do to get ready for pitching or presenting sessions...including some lucky charms. 🪄🍀
Things I layer, add or subtract depending on the kids' ages, seasons of the year, types of audience and my overall wellbeing and health.
As always, thank you for reading, supporting this work and becoming part of a social impact movement that's making waves in business spaces and corporate cultures.
✨🌱 Have a great week,
