Unexpected 'receipts' from being an (accidental) activist

🎊 Happy Small Business Week (in Canada) and a reminder registration closes today for the Changemaker Program in 2024: TODAY Oct 22nd ⬇️
A NOTE FROM AMY
Yesterday morning I woke up to get ready for a Startup Canada breakfast hosted for entrepreneurs downtown in Ottawa.
Before I headed downstairs to help everyone get ready for school / their day and be on my way, I logged into LinkedIn where I had a reply from a message I had sent to Canada's Member of Parliament for Mississauga—Streetsville and Minister of Small Business the Honourable Rechie Valdez! 👀 ⬇️
Screenshot for you:
Text reads:
Hi Amy - thank you for advocating for women, parents, and families to show that you can mix raising a family with running a business/being your own boss/choosing a career path! I did this throughout my entire career - keep up the great work
Making public speaking waves
I had notifications from sharing my fourth interview guest of Season 6, Martin Barnes, where he had written about his initial reaction to hearing about my babywearing while pitching and presenting, receiving a bit of chat and some nice words of encouragement on LinkedIn.
He trains people on public speaking, effective communication and usually works with C-Suite executives and founders leading teams, running businesses and applying for funding. He thinks presenting alongside your kids is a 'Jedi level' skill. I have never watched all of the Star Wars movies but Wikipedia tells me this means:
"The Jedi are powerful guardians of order and justice, who, through intuition, rigorous training, and intensive self-discipline, are able to wield a supernatural power known as the Force, thus achieving the ability to move objects with the mind, perform incredible feats of strength, and connect to certain people's thoughts."
How thoughtful – I was merely trying to get a message across and advocate for more inclusive spaces and work environments but now I can envision this metaphor. 🤣 Thank you Martin, I gladly accept.
Then another notification from Tiffany Scott and Alex Morgan, after I had completed my interview with them for their Mambition Podcast.
We spoke for over an hour and I covered how I've been mixing babies and business since 2016, entered all sorts of corporate spaces with my kids, launched my podcast during the pandemic, how I use my intuition, the ways growing up on a farm and experiencing all of life's ups and downs (some pre kids some post) have affected the way I show up and take up space.
I definitely had a vulnerability hangover afterward but I always say I'm an open book! If you'd like to listen to a bit of a recap of that chat I made an IG reel here. Their podcast interview with me will be out over the coming week.
Why does this matter and what about you?
Because it all started as a travel, flexible work and creativity blog in 2010, taking pictures, posting to social media and exploring the 'future of work'. Which evolved to include notes and experiences about my adventures as a new parent, navigating life as a remote worker and freelancer in Europe.
Then it included similar experiences in Canada, questioning why, doing market research, accidental and oftentimes messy activism, a focus group for parents with toys, donuts and coffee, meetups in startup spaces and now has become public speaking, government relations, a podcast and creating practical digital resources for you.
I never set out to achieve the above things in that order or from those individuals. But it makes me excited because these messages have been heard, received and action has been taken!
The social impact this work can have is being created in real time and there has been an activation taking place at individual, community and collective levels.
Your turn: Join me to keep the ripple effects going

Registration closes today for 2024 and I won't be opening it up again until the following year (second half of 2025), to focus on other areas of Mixing Babies And Business.
