For the ones tired of waiting for change

A NOTE FROM AMY
TLDR: Who knew going to the loo (and writing about it) could become a form of activism. Over the years I've discovered you can get people to change their behaviour, implement physical space changes and try out your ideas without pointing fingers. Oftentimes, people will act faster if you provide clear communication, indicate the benefits backed by facts and make it easy for them to see things from your perspective.
AND sometimes change needs more airtime and intentional effort. Here is a template to help you speed things up.
Since arriving back in Ottawa, Canada as a new parent in 2017, I've advocated for baby change facilities to be installed in publicly funded spaces dedicated to supporting entrepreneurs, economic growth, access to work and upskilling people.
No budget, no plan, no connections. Just our oldest two kids and I, cold pitching to strangers, sharing feedback and writing about our experiences. Blogger in the house! Don't underestimate me, my WordPress URL, G-Suite and some social channels.
For the ones tired of waiting for others to come around to the realities of trying to navigate life and work while raising tiny humans, I've created a simple template for you (no opt in required) to download, customize and share.
You can send it to local businesses and/or publicly funded spaces dedicated to people building a startup, growing their company, upskilling to change careers or attending events to network with other professionals. It's not perfect or fancy but it means you don't have to do it from scratch because I've been there, done that. [DOWNLOAD THE TEMPLATE]
🎊 So far, there have been three added to two buildings with coworking spaces, not counting local independent businesses who added them over the past nine years of us living in Ottawa. 🎊
Quick video of me in 2026 visiting a local third space coffee shop for another 'fit check', where I look to see if they have baby change facilities installed. ✅
Anyone else get tired of waiting, complaining and hoping for others to fix things? You're my people.
I didn't feel comfortable with changing our babies on the bathroom floor, a public sofa in an open plan area, in the back of our vehicle, on their stroller or my lap BUT I did it if there weren't any other options.
The alternative? Staying home, avoiding business spaces, opting out of conversations, programming and opportunities all because a piece of equipment cheaper than the annual plant watering budget wasn't installed in the bathrooms for parents and their babies.
You gotta do what you gotta do.
I know it can be intimidating to position yourself as a changemaker when you may be worried about what people will think of you, how it will all happen in detail, whether others will be upset or if you're the right person for this.
Now I know...I'm not responsible for how I make other people feel. But I AM responsible for my kids and their rights are human rights!
So let's get those kiddos (and you as their parent) proper facilities so you can focus on doing the work, meeting the people, learning the things, investing in yourself, growing your business, while leaving a local impact.
It's 2026 and we shouldn't have to choose between showing up and being able to meet basic care and hygiene needs. This is how we continue creating (not waiting for) safer spaces for parents and their families.
