How I Work (Without Hiding My Kids)

A PERSONAL NOTE  FROM ME (AMY):

It's our nine-year-old's birthday this month, which means it's also nearly one decade (10 whole years!) that I've been showing up as a parent in business spaces.

I didn't set out to start a social impact experiment* and movement in 2016...but that is EXACTLY what happened over time.

Question for you: What if you could design your work around your family's needs AND show up as a parent in business settings, instead of working like you don't have little people depending on you?

Three kids and nine years later, I've proven it IS possible to mix babies and business in real time.

From doing remote projects alongside our first son in England and discussing client work during coffee shop meetings with our second and third babies in Canada.

To bringing them as babies onto various event stages, while I presented keynotes for Running Remote, Creative Mornings and the Women's Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub.

Here's what most people reading this don't know...

Behind some visible wins, corporate logos and impromptu photos of me holding a mic while also holding my baby, I also developed:

  • A system for securing freelance, flexible and remote work
  • Tested it as an external contractor and employee on payroll
  • For clients, corporate partners and organizations spanning three continents and multiple industries over 20 years (I've done traditional AND digital marketing communications since 2005)

And for the past decade, it's been done between feeds, nap times, play dates, during school hours, while pregnant, postpartum and parenting.

The best part? I've discovered my results haven't been by sheer "luck", "natural talent" or because one of our kids was a "magical startup unicorn" baby.

I've delivered trainings and practical strategies to audiences of newcomers, entrepreneurs, remote-first leaders, primary caregivers of young kids, digital marketing service providers and small business employees.

After speaking to thousands of people, I've learned I can adapt my approach to flexible and remote work while also:

  • Honouring my current identity as a parent of young kids
  • Sharing it widely, as it's not location or industry specific
  • Showing up messy and imperfectly, as I continue to serve other parents
  • Creating a social impact, through working with both corporate organizations AND individuals like you

It's something I've researched, designed, implemented, tested and repeated, over and over again.

And for the first time, I'm creating an intimate program to teach my framework and strategies for transitioning to flexible and remote work.

While being openly, unapologetically present as a parent and bringing your family along for the ride.

This isn't about working from home, outsourcing your life or trying to squeeze on-site office culture into a remote-first model.

It's about:

  • Designing a career that grows WITH your family and current capacity
  • Creating work based on your skills within the rhythm of your days
  • Generating an income based on your ability to position yourself, without sacrificing your values
  • Building client and/or employer relationships which respect your status as a parent

I'm opening this to a small group of parents who want to design flexible work patterns into their family life, with ongoing support to ensure it fits their needs.

Because here's my truth from 15+ years of flexible and remote work: You don't have to choose between parenthood and professional development but you DO need a different approach.

Thank you for your support with this social impact movement to date,

P.S. Showing up this way for me has been a highly unconventional way to 'do business' over the years AND it has gotten me equally unexpected and wonderful results! If you're curious about my journey, check out this free webinar replay which comes down on Wednesday, July 9th.

Fun fact: I studied social marketing in Australia and it's all about using psychology and messaging to influence behaviour change. I didn't know it back then, but a few years later I'd be applying my studies in real time from within British, Irish and Canadian startup and corporate spaces.
