Someone I respect referred to me as ambitious

👀 A parent-friendly business note from Amy...
Quick reminder: I'm hosting a free online workshop tomorrow at 1 PM (ET) all about doing flexible and remote work in under 30 hours per week (kids more than welcome to join alongside you): https://mixingbabiesandbusiness.com/events
Now for story time: Ever have a week where your brain feels fuzzy and you're questioning your beliefs because you're all about keeping an open mind?
This is me lately but also hopefully will be you if you attend one of my trainings!
I was chatting with a branding and messaging expert recently and she defined my work as innovative and appealing to those who are also ambitious.
It brought up an automatic sense of disagreement in me.
She wasn't wrong but it alerted my attention to the emotions it stirred up.
I've never described myself as 'ambitious'.
However, I have been interviewed as a guest on the Mambition Podcast which derives its' name from the same word. Touché! 😆
During our conversation, the co-hosts asked me where I got my confidence from, how it developed over time...
My answer? My trauma.
I may have laughed alongside my response but I was deadpan, completely serious and resolute.
To this day 18 months after our interview, I would give the same answer.
My hardest experiences have been terrible to go through AND have also reminded me:
- We're all part of nature and I possess the ability to act as a force of nature, when the time calls for it (read about it in the Farmers Almanac, neuroscience and wellness research, astrologists also provides some compelling evidence)
- My instincts and intuition are heightened, very real and always available to me (it's something that gets even stronger with time and practice)
- If others misunderstand me, it may be my role to clarify things and advocate on behalf of myself OR it may be my choice to simply let it be (so much power lies between these points)
- My own self-trust, faith and sense of conviction are directly correlated to the results I'm able to produce outside of myself, whether it be moving people to act, persuading others to believe or creating something of material value (manifesting 101)
Like all great coaches, she encouraged me to consider the mindset piece behind my 'being allergic to the word ambitious' <--- my words not hers and meditate on them I did.
Something in me felt like the term 'ambitious' was outside of myself. Not negative. Not positive. But also not me.
I understand you can have ambitions.
Your plans, goals, achievements can be ambitious.
The inner writer in me also did a quick search of the definition of the word 'ambitious', synonyms and this is what came up:
Didn't go looking for an example related to being a hard-working mother with four children BUT how timely after the media response to this year's International Women's Day 'Give To Gain' campaign (not the same one aligned with the United Nations organization or theme)!
I won't go down that rabbit hole but all you need to know from my side of things is: I chose to spend the day doing gentle rehabilitation therapy, nourishing myself, responding to messages, asking for the sale and dealing with (and loving on) three somewhat dysregulated kids after a full day of school and the spring ahead time change here in Canada.
Back to the original word: Ambitious
Synonyms I DID relate to: Aspiring, enterprising, determined, progressive, enthusiastic and although I never would choose this, my work has been called 'pioneering'.
I wouldn't describe myself as motivated but things which do motivate me include: Sleep, pleasure, food, fresh coffee, love, connection, family, friendship, art, nature, play, fun, learning, skill, progress, beauty, adventure, joy, sunshine, any body of water, a warm fire with a promise of a cup of tea...the list goes on.
I suppose it's been why I'm infusing as much of those things as possible into my everyday existence, parenthood, life and work?
This past month also found me saying yes to three event invitations (two IRL and one virtual), all of which included some of my motivations. ✨
Recaps of these events, some of the business advice shared, accompanied by my real-life parenthood twists, including the search for a missing coyote glove at the hockey rink, a kid who wanted to hang out at home and dealing with sad leftovers are here:
- Founders Fund x Tease Wellness 'Love Actually' Panel Event (Instagram / YouTube)
- 'Self-Made Breakfast Tour' Stop in Ottawa hosted by PARO Centre for Enterprise and SCA (Instagram / YouTube)
- 'Transition To Flexible Work' presentation I did for the Growclass community (Instagram / YouTube)
I had to miss another event last week which I would normally go to on Parliament Hill because of life circumstances beyond my control.
It was also a no to protect the wellbeing of 'future me', which I'm learning to practice in real time but still isn't easy to do in the moment. Especially when the people and conversations are ones I value and support!
How about you:
- Have you had a belief challenged or a perspective shifted lately?
- Do you relate to the word 'ambitious'?
- What did you do (or resist doing) over the past month?
- Are your kids adjusting to the time change?
- How does it feel when you say no or decline something for your future self?
No pressure to answer any of those, but I do love to read your replies.

Feedback on my workshop from Growclass Community & Growth Manager, Hannah Permell last week:
Thank you for sharing your inbox with these updates, I hope they encourage you to keep doing life, work and parenthood your way, unapologetically.
And perhaps rethink the words you use to describe yourself and your work?
Either way, thanks for being here!
