How To Prepare For Brand Business Photos With Young Kids 🚼📊

Another mini IG livestream lesson from me (scroll for YouTube replay below) on getting brand and business headshot photography...with or without your kids! Please do yourself a favour and book in something more regularly than every six years like I did. 😆

Yesterday I shared a list of tips about getting professional photos done for yourself/your business/career/personal brand (not family photos) via my social media channels.

🚼📊📸 Tips include:

- Choose a good midday time for your energy and kids' routines

- Prep in advance but things outside your control will happen (ie. 10 cms snowstorm the afternoon before, wet kids winter boots that need to be dried out before school, traffic jam en route to venue, mood swings)

- Book somewhere with good natural light, ideally with a kid-friendly space if you are bringing little ones (change table, bring your own toys, access to food and drink options)

- Look after yourself before, during and after

- Bring practical clothing options — for me that means NO DRY CLEAN, won't show spit ups or other stains

- Same with if you need to breastfeed, wear comfy and simple clothes

- Ask a friend, family member or nice trustworthy person to help you with kid(s) during the photoshoot

- Try to relax, have fun, let the photographer direct you and trust them (let go)

- Celebrate afterward, some kind of reward for showing up

- Then get ready to come down to reality for pickup/evening routine!

✨️📸 Other tips I forgot to mention, which I did for both business branding photoshoots in 2018 and 2025:

- Send examples of other styles or headshot photos you like in advance

- Source clothing options from your own closet, friends, local shops, thrift stores

- Bring your own props (laptop, mic, journal, pens, tarot deck, crystals etc)

- Buy a beverage/treat for the photographer as a thank you

- Take some before, during and after photos and/or videos for b-roll and content marketing

In 2018 doing business headshots and branding photos looked like:

– between feeds for our 2.5 month-old baby

– while our 2-year-old toddler was at his morning program

– at a café, with a nice wall mural, big windows, in late summer (nice light)

– DIY hair & makeup

– all in, photos took under 40 minutes, baby was feeding or playing/alert the entire time, we arrived about 15-20 minutes early

– during waking window of after 9:30 am to 11:45 am

In 2025 doing business headshots and branding photos looks like:

– after school/preschool drop offs for 3, 6.5 and 8.5 year old kids

– morning after a big snow fall, midwinter on a -20C day

– traffic jams to busier downtown Ottawa, underground parking, locking up luggage at a hotel

– hair and makeup all done on site at a salon

– photos done at the hotel room and lobby

– all in, photos and prep took under 4 hours

– packed up, heading home for school pickups, with bakery treats

Life doesn't slow down, kids keep growing, no one will take your photos very often (unless you ask them)!

And if you believe in manifesting (or are open to experimenting with it), I believe it's always a good idea to update your social profiles, website, have something ready for opportunities: PR, events, speaking engagements, media requests and proposals.

For me, it's been over six years since I last organized something for myself outside of the events I hosted or spoke at (thankfully, event photographers documented those).

Some ideas for you to explore – hopefully you will be encouraged to try this with your kids around / between their school or daycare routines, whether you have under an hour or a few in one day, you'll be glad you tried it!

If you found this helpful, please let me know (hit reply) and/or share it with your network of parents who want to invest in themselves in 2025.

Until next week,
