I just hope I don’t have to go to church…

My wife and I spent several days this week in Tulsa, meeting with people from all around the country. Their thoughts on church and religion really stuck out to me.

First, there was a woman from DC. We were talking about getting involved in the community and networking in Tulsa. She was very excited about it, hopeful about building a strong group of relationships as she entered a new chapter in her life. Her one concern, though, was this, “I just hope I don’t have to go to church.” 


Then there was the young guy from Texas. He recently relocated to Tulsa and was telling us about some local attractions. There is some really cool architecture in Tulsa, not least of which is located in “the cathedral district.” You can probably guess what types of buildings are there. He pointed out one in particular and said that they actually give free tours on Sundays. This piqued some cautious interest in the group, but there was an audible sigh of relief from many when he followed up his statement with, “but don’t worry, you don’t have to attend a service to get the tour.” He should have been selling tickets because, at that point, people started making plans.
