Often times I am asked to share my thoughts and review someone's website for them. Sometimes, they even ask me to redesign it.

Before I agree, I like to surprise and delight folks by inquiring to learn more. I want to know more about them, personally and professionally.

I take a step back and ask them why?

Why are you redesigning your website?

Why now: why not in six months or not at all?

This helps me understand their needs better, and it helps me to see how I can help them reach their goals.

You get better feedback when you're willing to provide more perspective.

And, sometimes you need someone who's willing to listen to you.

You can apply this lesson to more experiences than just hiring a web designer…

So, the next time you want to hire someone… ask for their guidance. If the conversation becomes too vague, and it seems like they're just saying yes, I would ask them if they have any questions for you.

Here are the 3 main questions I ask anyone who is looking to update or improve their site.

1. What is the purpose of your business (not your website)?
2. What about your offerings do you think can be improved? This could be feedback from your client(s)/customer(s), or something you absolutely know could be better.
3. Describe your life after your dream website is complete. What is your business doing for you? What is your audience's experience?

Notice there's no design- or feature- related questions? That's because your site should help you, and not just be a website.

If you get some time to think about the above, write the answers to these questions down for yourself.
