The assistant who accidentally became the marketing department

Mar 18, 2026 7:23 pm

A few years ago I walked into a company to review their marketing.

The owner told me they were frustrated.

Leads were slow.

Growth had stalled.

Nothing seemed to be working.

So I asked the obvious question:

“Who runs marketing?”

They pointed down the hall.

It was their assistant.

Nice person. Hard worker.

But her actual job description included:

• scheduling

• payroll

• answering phones

• bookkeeping

• event coordination

…and now apparently marketing for the entire company.

This happens more often than people realize.

Businesses assume marketing is just posting on social media or sending an email newsletter.

So they assign it to whoever has time.

The result?

No strategy.

No measurable goals.

No real growth.

This is one of the Marketing Nightmares I’ll be breaking down at the seminar on April 10th.

Not to embarrass businesses.

But to show why these problems happen — and how to avoid them.

If you’ve ever felt like your marketing should be working better than it is… this event will probably explain why.
