The Pope made me do it

Hi folks,

For those of you who came to today's "Marketing Nightmares" seminar, I want to thank you a ton for coming out to Boulder City on a Friday to join us and our friends at the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce.

As I said when we started, the Pope informed us Catholics to refrain from harsh language and "watch our words"... so the fact that this presentation landed during the season of Lent, this meant I had to really tone down the Gordon Ramsey-esque language and overtones, but I hope you found certain moments where I caught myself about to go on a R-rated tangent and had to restrain myself funny enough.

One of the biggest reactions during the presentation came from someone in the front row who seemed to be having an existential crisis during Nightmare #3...

Yeah, if you're reading this, I totally saw your soul leave your body and whisper "it's like he gets me..."

Yes-- you're not alone.

Welcome to the long line of marketers who got hired to do one job and ended doing a dozen more.

If you're in this game long enough, you're going to end up being somewhere where they just pile everything on top of you.

Trust me, that was me in multiple jobs at different companies. It sucks.

We didn't get a chance to talk about it at the end but if you'd like some advice, it is this:

Use this time to gain some experience working across a bunch of different marketing disciplines, get some big projects under your belt, and the moment you start establishing some boundaries to prevent scope creep from getting worse, the moment your boss steps over that line--- start looking for a new job.

Easier said than done, I know, but either you crack first or they crack first, take your pick.

At the next place, however, be very intentional about what marketing discipline you're a true expert in.

"I'm an email marketing, here is how I improved our list health and grew the size from X to X..."

or "I was the brand manager, here is my portfolio from our last main project..."

If you come in with "I can do everything, I'm great at everything, please hire me..."

Trust me, they're looking at you like "they'll do the job of 10 people for one's salary, nice!"

I hope that's helpful.

For those who weren't able to make it today, have no fear, we've got one more Marketing Nightmares scheduled right now for Friday, April 10th at Wildfire Boulder in Henderson.

Here is the sign up if you're interested (click here).

Whether you're a marketing professional, business owner, entrepreneur, or anyone that remotely is involved in the marketing decisions at your organization, this presentation is for you.

And we'll have pizza, which is far better than the vegetable platter we brought today, so maybe you just come for that and an excuse to skip work on a Friday (can't argue with that logic, right?)

Take care and have a great weekend,

Remso
