What Your Father Didn't Teach You About Shaving
Finding Your "Signature Scent"
How do you find your signature scent? It may not be as difficult as it first seems, particularly for the man who's already into traditional wet shaving. But it does need a little research and a game plan.
There are a couple inspirations for this article. The first is the launch of Mission Fragrances by my friend Antonio Centeno of Real Men Real Style. Mission Fragrances officially launched on 27 December 2021 but Antonio scent me a pre-launch sample of the fragrances, which got me to thinking about the subject.
Another inspiration is the current giveaway of a fragrance-based grooming product kit from Sharpologist sponsor Saponificio Varesino!
The internet is replete with detailed information and discussions about fragrance--a simple search engine query will return enough data to keep you occupied for days.
But for the purposes of this article, I'll summarize the important points on the basics of fragrance.
The best way to find a fragrance is to test to determine if it complements your natural body odor in person over the period of a day.
I have outlined a step-by-step process that the traditional wet shaver can use to find their best signature scent.
The 'Is A Barbershop Shave Really Worth It?' Poll
That poll I sent out last week asking for your opinion on an article about getting a shave at a barbershop? Yeah, it was overwhelmingly "pro" with over 80% of the respondents saying I should write it up. Look for it on Sharpologist soon!
Razor Emporium Shave Soap
Razor Emporium is known for their hardware offerings like the Rex Ambassador, and their vintage razor restoration service.
But they also have a modest line of in-house "software" as well. I picked up some Razor Emporium Small Batch Shave Soap in the "Citrus" scent to try.

Captain's Choice Unscented vs. Noble Otter Bare
The latest installment of Ed McCarthy's scent-free soap competition features Captain’s Choice Unscented Shaving Soap versus Noble Otter Bare Shave Soap. In this series Ed is focusing on overall shaving performance so neither a soap’s scent nor its cost is a factor in the review.

By the way, several readers have asked about a similar article about unscented shaving creams. I'm working on it now!
