What Your Father Didn't Teach You About Shaving

My Conversation With Merkur

I just got off a video call with the owner of Merkur in Germany, Ulrich Wiethoff! It was a very wide-ranging conversation, including discussions about the company's history, the product line, and what's coming.

One particularly interesting thing I found was the 'evolution' of the venerable 34C. There have been several design modifications (pre-2007, 2007-2024, and post '24), which explains some of the different reviews you may have seen over the years.

Yes, I'm planning a Sharpologist article about what you need to know about the merkur 34C.

Other than the 34C article, if you have a question about Merkur as a company or their products, hit me up with a reply so I can put together additional articles (and maybe even some videos)!

BTW, if you've ever wondered how to properly pronounce the name Merkur, it's "mer-CURE".

Why Mild Razors Can Produce More Irritation Than Efficient Ones

Why can mild razors cause more irritation than efficient ones?

Mild razors usually remove less hair per stroke. To compensate, shavers naturally add passes and touch ups.

The shave feels controlled and safe, but total skin contact increases quietly. By the time the shave is finished, the skin has had far more interaction than what the shave may have realized.

The Small Changes You Forget You’re Making Between Shaves

At some point in wet shaving, many shavers run into a familiar frustration.

They use the same razor. The same blade. The same soap. The same routine.

Yet the shave feels different.

Sometimes it feels worse. Sometimes just off. And when that happens, the first reaction is often confusion: nothing changed, so why did the shave feel different?
