Is a good Mum a perfect Mum?

Oh hi amazing Mum,

When I had my first bubba, I had taken what I thought was temporary maternity leave from my high level government career. Pre baby, I was very career focused, I was climbing the ladder, I had big expectations of myself and a super committed work ethic. I took 12 months, thinking I'd be slotting right back into my old career in some way once my bubba was about 1 year old.

So, I brought all that expectation and drive into my motherhood journey. I thought I should just be able to do it all and do it all PERFECTLY from the get go. Understand and anticipate my baby's needs. Get my baby onto a schedule (eeek, trying to project manage my baby!). Keep up with the mountains of washing (I chose to do reusable nappies almost 100% of the time, so washing mountain was Everest sized). Maintain the house in a clean and tidy state. Take my baby to all the enrichment classes and activities...

Phew.

It took me quite some time to realise there is no such thing as a "perfect" Mum. That a good Mum, in fact a great Mum, is one who chooses to LET GO of the small stuff. A great Mum is one who chooses a daily rhythm that works for her and her family. A great Mum is one who understands that being kind to HERSELF is just as important as giving love and kindness to her special people.

A good Mum is not a perfect Mum. Because perfection is a myth.

You are amazing in all of your glorious imperfection Mama!

Yours in kindness,

Michelle
