CERTIFICATE IN WORKING WITH COUPLES ONLINE
The Certificate in Couples Therapy Course is designed for people who usually work one to one, and want to work with couples…or those who are doing some work with couples and would like to update their skills. We have had great feedback from people who have been couples therapists for years, who attended our workshops, and found them enlightening and beneficial. At the other end of the spectrum, counsellors sometimes come who have no intention working with couples, they attend these courses for their own learning about relationships (as they say, their clients are all in relationships – so these courses really help them with their clients…..and they are in relationships themselves too!!!)

Creative Writing In The Therapeutic Encounter
This experiential 2-day course focuses on creative writing and its use within therapy, therapeutic settings and self-supervision.
Therapists often work with client’s writing, or encourage clients to create within, or between, sessions. Some therapists have trained to be ‘poetry therapists’ and divide sessions between writing and discussion of the text, accelerating the process, or evincing new strands to the therapeutic work.
There is a risk to introducing writing, as it is revealing and sometimes walks the line between vulnerability and healing; there can be concerns about ‘quality’, which therapists can allay with a good understanding of creative writing as both a magnifying and softening tool, to say the ‘unsayable’, or to understand experience in a more tangible form.
Some counsellors and psychotherapists use creative writing as part of their own reflective practice to understand transferential relationships, create boundaries between sessions, and for personal and professional development.
Through experiential practice, this workshop will explore some helpful techniques and raise confidence in using the written (and spoken) word.
The workshop will focus on a range of applications, including:
- Supporting client metaphors
- Concrete and abstract images into words – poetry as resource
- Narratives and counter-narratives
- Reflective practice – employing form for clients and self-supervision
- Autobiographical fiction
- Applications and limitations
An empathic, relational approach will be experienced first hand as the process of the training is trauma-informed.
Lives of Quiet Desperation: Therapeutic Work with Men
Despite the advances made by feminism, the ‘new age’ & the ‘men’s movement’ men are still notoriously reluctant to present for any kind of therapeutic support. Yet levels of depression, violence & suicide in men, particularly young men, are worryingly high. What is it that leads to this state of affairs? How, as practitioners, can we engage effectively with men? What unconscious biases or prejudices might we be holding that will interfere with or sabotage our work?
This training will provide participants with hands-on experience of a range of methods & approaches, which they can take away and add to their to add to their tool kits, including personal reflection, group and pair work, creativity, poetry & story.
2 HOUR ONLINE TALKS
The Boy Code and The Well of Grief Part 1: When Tears become Bullets
This is a unique one off event - 2 hour talk on December 6th
with William Ayot and Simon Roe
The Boy Code is a term first coined by William Pollack PhD. It has also been called The Convict Code, The Lads’ Code, Dude Code and Macho Accord etc.. It involves an unwritten set of ‘rules’ which young men follow and abide by to be thought of as ‘proper’ men, to gain a sense of status and peer-respect. It starts early and can rule young lives. Big boys don’t cry.
The first rule of the Boy Code is that we don’t talk about the Boy Code. To do so would imply weakness, disloyalty and a lack of manliness. After years of work on the subject Dr Pollack made the devastating assertion – ‘When boys cannot cry bullets become their tears’.
Join poet William Ayot and body psychotherapist Simon Roe as they unpick the paradoxes and injunctions of Boy Code, it’s devastating consequences (depression, suicide, isolation and shame among them) and its enduring benefits in a world where men are often still expected to be providers and defenders.
The Boy Code and The Well of Grief Part 2: Learning to Shudder
This is a unique one off event - 2 hour talk on January 10th
With William Ayot and Simon Roe
The Boy Code eats into the lives of boys and men, denying them choice and self-respect, instilling an inability to articulate feelings, and a pernicious sense of shame around ‘not measuring up’, that must be hidden at all costs.
Simon Roe and William Ayot reconvene to deepen their exploration of the Boy Code and its withering effects. How might we be colluding with the Boy Code? What can we do about it? How can we loosen its grip on those we love – and upon ourselves.
It’s complicated. We can’t simply eradicate it or expunge it from our lives. These living parts of us need challenging, certainly, but they also need to be welcomed and recognised – for the protection they may have given us – or may give us in the future.
What we can be sure of is that we need to access our grief. In the company of other men we need to grieve, to accept our vulnerability and witness that of others. In a world of hardening hearts and ‘right-hard-men’, we need to learn to shudder.
Join William and Simon as they deepen their understanding of themselves, and others, as men and seek to develop the tools necessary to face a daunting and uncertain future.
This is an online, experiential workshop for men and women. You do not have to have attended part 1.
IN PERSON RESIDENTIAL WORKSHOP FOR MEN
Exploring Male Rites of Passage – Men & The Long Road Home
A Residential Rites of Passage Workshop for Men
with
William Ayot & Simon Roe
There’s often a hunger in a man – a yen for authenticity, a longing for friendship, and a yearning for a homecoming he can’t quite put a name to. Cut off and estranged by culture and habit, many of us live out our lives in isolation, fear, and resentment – yet there is another way. This powerful retreat offers men an opportunity to take off their armour and explore – safely, together – with other men of like mind and yearning.
In ancient times such events were called Rites of Passage or Mysteries. They called for courage, trust in others, and a willingness (or a need) to change. Taking story and poetry as our starting points, our work together will include ritual, breath and body work, creativity sessions, time in nature, and emergent group sessions that may re-define or re-direct us… Our story points towards issues of grief and loss, protective pomposity, repentance, and the eternal male struggles between, façade and truth, ego and soul.
As with any journey into the world of myth, or the unknown, we will meet guides and helpers as well as challenges – and at the heart of the story we may find ourselves. Only then, like the hero of our own story, can we step forward into a fuller life, turning our troubles into learnings and our wounds into gold.
Join Simon and William as they once more open a safe, emergent space for men in the Arthurian landscape of myth and mystery.
