🦉 WoW #89 - Time Flies When You're Becoming Wise 🦉

Oct 06, 2021 6:20 pm

Happy Wednesday, Wise Owl Nation!

It's officially October now, which means we are in the final quarter of 2021. That's right, 2021 is pretty close to ending.

With the passing of another year, the continuing pandemic, and working from home being the new normal, I've been thinking about how weird the inexorable passing of time feels.

The human mind can only process so much, and for me, the last two years have passed in a blur. This is why setting yourself up for success with good habits, routines, and automated financial processes is so important.

Because two years can pass by in a blink, and only if you've been consistent over that time will you have made massive gains in wisdom, health, or wealth.

The passage of time is the primary focus this week, as I aim to shorten the length of these newsletters to cram as much value into as few words as I can.

Let's get into it.

You can find all past issues (including this one) here.

🧠 Wisdom Tip(s) of The Week: A Perspective on Time

There is a blog called Wait But Why written by a curious man named Tim Urban. I've linked his articles in this newsletter before, and I've probably shared a graphic or two of his.

What time is exceptionally good at is displaying advanced concepts with simple images, and is world-famous for this simple graphics on time.

Humans have both more and less time than we think. This is a rather confusing statement, I admit.

Take a look at this graphic.

What you're seeing (obviously) is a visual representation of a potential life from birth all the way to year 90.

No matter how you look at this graph, it shows that you have both more time, and less time than you thought. Most people feel that they have less time than they think because they are finally seeing an entire life condensed into a rectangle of circles (it's 36 circles by 30 circles).

There are 1080 circles in that picture. I counted.

I turned 32 in April of 2022, so my life is on the "30th Birthday" line about 2/3 of the way across. My entire life only takes up 1/3 of the entire grid. To me, a lifetime has been just under 32 years. I have two more lifetimes ahead of me, and I get to do ALL of them as an adult. Before now most of my life was spent as a dumb, ignorant kid.

Both of my parents fall beyond the 60th birthday line. Even they have most of "my lifetime" ahead of them if they're lucky.

It really just depends on how you look at and perceive the image. Either way, time is passing and each of us has a finite amount of time to live our lives.

Struggle in the pursuit of growth, but don't let yourself struggle or suffer for the sake of struggle and suffering. Unless struggle and suffering make you happy somehow, but that is a topic for a completely different newsletter.

No matter how old you are you still have time.

Of course, no matter what you do, time will continue to pass you by, so don't waste it.

🤑 Wealth Thought of The Week: Ethereum 2 news

While the world of crypto goes up and down, Ethereum continues to push forward and improve itself.

The next big Ethereum upgrade is going to be the merger of Ethereum 1 into Ethereum 2.

The major changes this will enact are:

  • No more mining for Ethereum
  • Ethereum will run solely from staking
  • Ethereum 2 will be able to handle a minimum of 100,000 transactions per second. For reference, Visa handles about 1,700 transactions per second, while claiming to be able to hand 24,000 transactions per second.
  • The transaction costs on Ethereum will plummet since there will be so much more block space to meet the demand
  • Staking rewards unlock and become available to spend/reinvest
  • The total supply of ETH will stabilize and start to decrease at times

Speculation on what these changes will cause

  • The beginning of massive Ethereum adoption by legacy financial services like Visa, PayPal, Mastercard, etc.
  • The price of Ether will likely rise to and exceed $10,000 per ETH. This is a conservative speculation
  • Products and services will start to show up on the Ethereum 2 blockchain that couldn't exist on Ethereum 1
  • More and more vendors will accept ETH as payment options
  • You will be able to have a Visa card that is connected to your personal ETH wallet, and you will be able to spend your crypto without needing Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, etc.

When will this merger happen?

Currently, the expectation is that it will happen towards the end of Q1 of 2022, so around the March-April timeline.

Ethereum Stats:

Total ETH burned - 452,000 ETH (or $1.5 + billion!!)

ETH burned in the last week - 61,500 ETH !!!! 😱

Avg ETH burn per minute (all-time) - 5.07 ETH/min

My favorite website for watching the ETH 🔥 is ultrasound.money.

The Bankless Podcast: This is a link to the bankless podcast on Spotify. Start from the very beginning and learn why I am so positive about the power of Crypto and Ethereum in particular. You can find the podcast easily on the internet, but I am linking to episode 1 on Spotify for your convenience.

Buy your first ETH or BTC:

  • On Coinbase - this is the easiest starting place for the newest beginners
  • On Gemini - Another great option founded by the Winklevoss brothers. They are based out of New York.
  • On Kraken - Kraken has a bit of a harder user interface, but they already have ETH staking enabled with the push of a single button.

Earn interest on your crypto

  • BlockFi - Currently, you can earn 5% interest on BTC, 5% interest on ETH, and a whopping 8.25% on stable coins like USDC. Use the referral code b09f24fd to support the newsletter.

Other tools:

  • Argent Wallet - This is the best mobile wallet for Ethereum, Defi, and all things on the Ethereum network, including staking. They even have plans to implement Layer 2 to remove network fees.
  • Ethhub - this is a weekly newsletter that lists out all the interesting news, articles, and tweets that have happened in Crypto that week. It's free and awesome.
  • Ethdashboard - A simple dashboard to look at various metrics in the ethereum space. I mainly use this as a quick tool to check ETH gas fees.
  • Cointracker - this is one of the better tools for tracking all of your various crypto across all of the various wallets, exchanges, etc. You can also use them to do your crypto taxes each year.
  • Metamask - this is a crypto wallet that you can access from your browser and allows you to easily interact with blockchain apps online.
