🦉 WoW #55 - Quantity, Quality, and Expectations 🦉

Feb 10, 2021 8:11 pm

Happy Wednesday, Wise Owl Nation!

Good morning my friends.

This week I want to cover a counterintuitive concept, one that when you read it, makes you question whether or not it is true.

That concept is:

"Quantity over quality."

Yes, you read that right. Quantity over quality.

But wait, isn't it the reverse? Isn't quality more important?

Not today it isn't. Today quantity is more important, and I will explain why in the next section.

Let's get into it.

You can find all past issues (including this one) here.

🧠 Wisdom Thought of The Week: Sometimes Quantity is greater than Quality

One of the greatest enemies of productivity is the pursuit of perfection. How many times in my life have I not even started a project because I was afraid I didn't have the skills or the knowledge to do something perfectly?

The answer is "too many times."

For most of my 20s, I wanted to write. It took me over half a decade to finally get over my own insecurities about my writing abilities and just start producing content.

In 2018 I wrote over 100 articles on Medium. Some of those articles I spent entire days on, trying to make them as good as possible. Some articles I wrote in under an hour.

What I found is that the more content I got out into the world, the more people found my content. The quick articles would sometimes be read by thousands of people while the "good" articles might only be seen by a dozen people. But the more I wrote and published, the wider my net became.

I realized that articles I thought were awful, others loved. It is honestly the weirdest feeling to have someone tell me how great a newsletter or article is when I personally feel it was terrible.

Then I realized something...

Quality is subjective. Quantity is not.

If I had focused solely on quality, the quantity of articles I put out in the world would have been a fraction of what they were.

What was trash writing to me was great reading to someone else. It was a hard lesson to learn.

This is a viewpoint about the importance of getting in your reps, learning how to grow, and managing the expectations of that growth.

For Jame's Clear - quantity mattered a lot:

"It took me...
200+ articles before I got a book deal.
250+ articles before I got major media coverage.
100+ interviews before my book hit the bestseller list.
You need a lot of shots on goal. Not everything will work, but some of it will.
Keep shooting." - James Clear

Quantity over quality can be interpreted as another way to say "done is better than perfect."

It is much better if you eat healthy 80% of the time for a year than if you eat healthy 100% of the time for a month.

Often quantity is how you can achieve quality, so stop starting, and start finishing.

🥑 Health Thought of The Week: The Expectations of Weight Loss

Quantity over quality can be a dangerous discussion when it comes to health and fitness, so in this section, I am going to focus on managing your expectation so that you can stay motivated and be consistent.

Your body wants to keep you healthy at all times, so when you start a weight loss journey you need to understand that it is a journey first and foremost. The work that you put in now matters, but you won't see the results of that work until weeks or months down the road.

The Paper Towel Analogy - One of my favorite analogies when it comes to weight loss is the paper towel analogy.

If you'd like to watch an Instagram video explaining this, one of my favorite fitness IG follows @soheefit did a great video on this recently. You can watch that here.

Here is the gist:

  • You are a big ol' roll of paper towels.
  • You want to be a thin roll
  • Every day you exercise and eat well, you take a single paper towel off of your roll
  • For days you can't see any difference at all
  • However, after 30 days or so of being consistent you start to notice a change. You've removed over 30 individual paper towels!
  • This change becomes greater and greater the longer you stay consistent.
  • After 60 days you see a bigger change
  • And after 90 days you look like a completely different person.

Just because you don't see the results right away doesn't mean you aren't making progress.

Sometimes you have to put in a ton of work before something changes and you finally get the results you want.

Don't give up on yourself. Keep pushing forward and stay consistent no matter what.

You might be inches away from a breakthrough.

💲 Wealth Thought of The Week: More income streams is better than one income stream

To follow the theme of this week, the wealth section is going to focus on "multiple income streams."

Someone once told me "don't ever give one person the power to ruin your life," and to me, it was a scary wake up call. I think the person who told me this was trying to give me relationship advice but ended up giving me amazing business advice.

This quote made me realize that I was 100% reliant on a single source of income - my salaried job. All it would take was a single global event, like a pandemic, and poof, all of my income would disappear.

This is why it's important to me to have many income streams, regardless of the quality of those income streams. Why does quantity matter more than quality in this sense?

Because income streams can be grown. They might be weak now, but over time, with enough consistency and effort, they could completely replace my primary work income.

There is a famous anonymous quote that says "millionaires have an average of seven streams of income."

My income streams and their perspective sizes:

  • My job (large)
  • Medium article royalties (small)
  • Amazon affiliate royalties (small)
  • Crypto Mining (small)
  • Crypto Interest accounts like BlockFi (medium)
  • ETH staking (medium)

Potential future income streams:

  • Online poker
  • Book sales
  • Monetizing this newsletter
  • YouTube/Podcast ad revenue
  • Twitch Streaming revenue

So if I were to lose my job, I could spend the time I normally spend at work growing the other revenue streams.

As it stands right now, I am not wholly dependent on my full-time job.

More income streams also allow for a larger Gap of Opportunity, allowing me to save and invest more each month, which actually increases the income from the ETH staking revenue stream as I buy and stake more ETH.

Quote of the week:

In the end, the choice of whether or not you take action on what I have written today is yours.

Will you put in the quantity required to achieve the quality?

That's up to you.

Have a great week!

This concludes our issue this week, I hope it gave you some perspective or injected a little motivation into your life!

If it helped, let me know! I read every newsletter response I receive, and I absolutely love hearing from all of you. This newsletter is for you, so I need your help to make it as great as possible.

If you'd like to show me some love for writing all this free stuff, you can always buy me a coffee.

More Resources

I will be adding to this section over time as we find resources that will help you all.

Crypto Resources:

The Bankless Podcast: This is a link to the bankless podcast on Spotify. Start from the very beginning and learn why I am so positive about the power of Crypto and Ethereum in particular. You can find the podcast easily on the internet, but I am linking to episode 1 on Spotify for your convenience.

Buy your first ETH or BTC:

  • On Coinbase - this is the easiest starting place for the newest beginners
  • On Gemini - Another great option founded by the Winklevoss brothers. They are based out of New York.
  • On Kraken - Kraken has a bit of a harder user interface, but they already have ETH staking enabled with the push of a single button.

BlockFi - Earn interest on your crypto. Currently, you can earn 6% interest on BTC, 5.25% interest on ETH, and a whopping 8.6% on stable coins like USDC.

Use the referral code b09f24fd to support the newsletter.

I've earned thousands of dollars (in crypto) using blockfi the last few years.
