[Open this one!]🦉 WoW #71 - Write to learn🦉

Jun 02, 2021 6:32 pm

Happy Wednesday, Wise Owl Nation!

*** Resend due to a weird glitch with the first version of this email ***

My work desk broke yesterday.

It's still sort of usable, but everything is at a small incline.

For this reason, this newsletter is a little bit difficult to write, but have no fear my friends, for not even a tilted desk will stop me from writing to you!

The failure of my desk to stay healthy made me think a lot about all of my current systems and routines, and I am far too reliant on quite a few things continuing to work.

So, I am going to think about that this week and write about creating backup systems when my main ones fail. Like a desk breaking randomly for no reason.

This week though, I write about:

  • Writing! So meta, I know.
  • Prioritize your damn health
  • Wealthfront, an all-in-one traditional personal finance app that has impressed me

Let's get into it.

You can find all past issues (including this one) here.

✍🏻 Wisdom Tip(s) of The Week: Write More To Learn Faster

Did you know that I read a ridiculous amount?

If you've been a long-time subscriber then hell yeah you know this.

I used to review books in this newsletter before I realized that was a lot of work for not a lot of value.

Anyway, I have espoused the value of reading to "always be learning."

Well, today I write to you to talk about the next step of that process - writing!

One of the reasons I love to write is that it helps me do the following things all at once:

  • Sort out my thoughts
  • Clear my mental headspace
  • Practice written communication
  • Create something shareable to help others
  • Force me to think about a concept completely
  • Learn a concept faster due to deeper thinking

The last two bullet points are what I am going to focus on in this section.

When you try to write about a topic, you learn quite quickly where the holes in your knowledge are.

Something about writing about a topic makes you think about it in a more comprehensive way.

Also, there is a strange thing that happens to me when i start to write about a topic. Once I get an idea or thought out of my head about a topic, it is replaced by another idea or thought around that same topic. The first idea or thought was taking up space in my head, but once put down on digital paper, it creates room for the next thought or idea.

Writing can help you figuratively mine more ideas from your mind.

And that, my friends, is a fantastic way to learn faster.

🥗 Health Thoughts of The Week: Prioritize your Health

I turned 31 last month, and the more I focus and prioritize my health, the more I think about how I should have done this so much sooner.

I've written about the idea of "the earlier in life you strengthen your body and get healthy, the longer you get to live strong and healthy."

With that concept in mind, it is never a bad idea to put your health and wellbeing as a priority over all else.

Things that are hard to turn into habits unless you put a TON of focus on them:

  • Eating healthy food
  • Being able to cook healthy food
  • Knowing what healthy food to buy
  • Knowing how much healthy food to buy
  • Daily exercise
  • Knowing how to exercise the right way
  • Drinking enough water
  • Stretching

Eventually, all of these things can become second nature to you, but only if you can prioritize them long enough for them to become an actual habit.

Creating a permanent habit takes a long time. In fact, the longer you can work to form a habit, the longer that habit has a chance of lasting.

So, my friend, please prioritize your health.

It is the most important thing you're putting off.

🤑 Wealth Tool Highlight: Wealthfront

Last week I wrote about saving your money. It's been on my mind lately as I think about where I might have some holes in my personal finance game.

Well, this past week I saw an Instagram ad for an app that I have been aware of for almost a decade but forgot about. It's called Wealthfront, and a long time ago it was very similar to the app Betterment I have written about before.

Now, before I get into what Wealthfront can do now, I want to clarify that this is not an ad. I won't benefit from recommending this app in any way. I've just been thinking about traditional personal finance, and this app showed up to remind me how good it is.

These are all of the checking account features I had no clue about.

Pretty good, but the part that really sold me on the tool, is that it can automate savings.

Like I said last week when you automate your savings, your savings can actually grow. I even went so far as to have your savings automated on a daily basis, which is admittedly a little wild, but it is extremely effective.

What else Wealthfront can do:

  • automate investing
  • automate bill pay
  • Show you a comprehensive view of all of your accounts
  • Help you plan for big purchases
  • Help you forecast your retirement

The app is worth checking out at the very least.

I love the idea of modern-day banking, where all the best features are in one place.

The ideal for me is to be your own bank via crypto, but this is a really strong alternative to commercial banks while we wait for the Crypto infrastructure to be built.

Speaking of Crypto - next week I will get back into writing about it, as you all probably need a few reminders of why Ethereum is awesome 😜.

Have a great week!

This concludes our issue this week, I hope it gave you some perspective or injected a little motivation into your life!

If it helped, let me know! I read every newsletter response I receive, and I absolutely love hearing from all of you. This newsletter is for you, so I need your help to make it as great as possible.

If you'd like to show me some love for writing all this free stuff, you can always buy me a coffee.

More Resources

I will be adding to this section over time as we find resources that will help you all.

Crypto Resources

The Bankless Podcast: This is a link to the bankless podcast on Spotify. Start from the very beginning and learn why I am so positive about the power of Crypto and Ethereum in particular. You can find the podcast easily on the internet, but I am linking to episode 1 on Spotify for your convenience.

Buy your first ETH or BTC:

  • On Coinbase - this is the easiest starting place for the newest beginners
  • On Gemini - Another great option founded by the Winklevoss brothers. They are based out of New York.
  • On Kraken - Kraken has a bit of a harder user interface, but they already have ETH staking enabled with the push of a single button.

Earn interest on your crypto

  • BlockFi - Currently, you can earn 6% interest on BTC, 5.25% interest on ETH, and a whopping 8.6% on stable coins like USDC. Use the referral code b09f24fd to support the newsletter.

Other tools:

  • Argent Wallet - This is the best mobile wallet for Ethereum, Defi, and all things on the Ethereum network, including staking. They even have plans to implement Layer 2 to remove network fees.
  • Ethhub - this is a weekly newsletter that lists out all the interesting news, articles, and tweets that have happened in Crypto that week. It's free and awesome.
  • Ethdashboard - A simple dashboard to look at various metrics in the ethereum space. I mainly use this as a quick tool to check ETH gas fees.
  • Cointracker - this is one of the better tools for tracking all of your various crypto across all of the various wallets, exchanges, etc. You can also use them to do your crypto taxes each year.
  • Metamask - this is a crypto wallet that you can access from your browser and allows you to easily interact with blockchain apps online.
