🦉 WoW #94 - Prioritize Now, not How 🦉

Nov 10, 2021 8:24 pm

Happy Wednesday, Wise Owl Nation!

I consider myself a thinker and a learner.

On most days you can find me in my office reading articles, watching how-to videos, or working through a course.

I love to learn how to do things.

But what happens when the time comes to actually do the thing?

That's where it gets harder. It's easy to learn how to do something, but it is much harder to go out there and actually do it.

That is what his week's newsletter is about.

Prioritize now over how.

Let's get into it.

You can find all past issues (including this one) here.

🧠 Wisdom Tip(s) of The Week: Now versus How

This newsletter is actually one example of how I prioritized now over how. For years I wanted a way to write out my thoughts and share them with a select group of people that want to read my words.

I researched how to do start a newsletter, how to grow it, and then how to monetize it. Then I didn't start it.

Eventually, I was sick of procrastination and just write the first newsletter. What I wanted Wise Owl Wednesday to be hadn't fully formed yet, but that didn't matter. You start and take action, then figure out the rest along the way.

You can't iterate or improve on something you haven't started.

You don't get to edit and re-write a book until you've written the damn book.

You don't get better at poker until you play poker and then review your mistakes.

Action is a requirement of self-improvement.

Success does not happen without taking action.

The how comes along the way.

Now > How.

🥑 From a health perspective

I am on a permanent journey to improve the quality of my health.

Between wisdom, health, and wealth the section I have had the least amount of success in is health.

What has always burdened me is the how.

What foods should I eat?

What meals do I cook with those foods?

How do I count calories on the food I eat when I go to restaurants?

How, how, how, how.

We all know how to be healthier.

Right now, regardless of how healthy you are, you can think of a few things you should be doing that you aren't.

I know this better than most, and what has helped me actually take action is this concept of Now > How.

If you take baby steps to become healthier, you will start to get healthier. The healthier you become, the more energy you will have to take bigger steps.

For me, the "keystone habit" around my own health turned out to be drinking water. Pretty random as far as keystone habits are concerned, but I've never been a drinker of just water.

An odd phenomenon happens when you start drinking the right amount of water each day. Your body starts to like it. You start to feel thirsty much more easily because your body has become used to having enough water in it.

In a sense, I feel thirstier more often now that I am drinking a lot of water than I ever did drinking diet sodas, almond milk, etc.

Anyway, the more days in a row I consistently drink enough water, the better my body feels and the easier it is for me to add other daily habits to my health routine. I'm already exercising a few days a week including some weight training.

The drinking of water makes it easier for me to get those exercises in.

Now > How.

🤑 From a wealth perspective

This story continues into the realm of money.

The concept of building wealth scares a lot of people.

It's one of those weird concepts that feels too hard to pull off if you are struggling to make ends meet as it is.

Most adults work to earn money so they can buy the things they need/want.

So where do you start? What should you do first? blah blah blah

You start now; get some skin in the game and then iterate.

If you want to invest in crypto, then do that.

If you want to pay down your debts, then do that.

Start now. Don't fall into analysis paralysis.

In 2013, when I was 23 I had a decision to make. I had three months left on my lease, and my roommate and I had planned to rent rooms with our mutual friend after he bought a house.

My friend's financing fell through and he wouldn't be able to buy a house. That left all three of us without living arrangements for 2014.

They looked to me since I was the only one of the three of us that could qualify for a mortgage.

We didn't have time to figure out the how, I had to react in the now.

So I did.

I used an FHA loan to only put 3.5% down on a 3-bedroom starter home.

My two friends rented the other two rooms from me and for the ensuing three years, I had my mortgage paid for by those two friends of mine.

Now > How.

Ethereum Stats:

Total ETH burned - 830,000 ETH (or $3.9+ billion!!)

ETH burned in the last week - 85,000 ETH !!!! 😱

Avg ETH burn per minute (all-time) - 5.94 ETH/min

My favorite website for watching the ETH 🔥 is ultrasound.money.

The Bankless Podcast: This is a link to the bankless podcast on Spotify. Start from the very beginning and learn why I am so positive about the power of Crypto and Ethereum in particular. You can find the podcast easily on the internet, but I am linking to episode 1 on Spotify for your convenience.

Buy your first ETH or BTC:

  • On Coinbase - this is the easiest starting place for the newest beginners
  • On Gemini - Another great option founded by the Winklevoss brothers. They are based out of New York.
  • On Kraken - Kraken has a bit of a harder user interface, but they already have ETH staking enabled with the push of a single button.

Earn interest on your crypto

  • BlockFi - Currently, you can earn 4.5% interest on BTC, 5% interest on ETH, and a whopping 8.25% on stable coins like USDC. Use the referral code b09f24fd to support the newsletter.

Other tools:

  • Argent Wallet - This is the best mobile wallet for Ethereum, Defi, and all things on the Ethereum network, including staking. They even have plans to implement Layer 2 to remove network fees.
  • Ethhub - this is a weekly newsletter that lists out all the interesting news, articles, and tweets that have happened in Crypto that week. It's free and awesome.
  • Ethdashboard - A simple dashboard to look at various metrics in the ethereum space. I mainly use this as a quick tool to check ETH gas fees.
  • Cointracker - this is one of the better tools for tracking all of your various crypto across all of the various wallets, exchanges, etc. You can also use them to do your crypto taxes each year.
  • Metamask - this is a crypto wallet that you can access from your browser and allows you to easily interact with blockchain apps online.
