🦉 WoW #60 - My New Favorite Tools 🦉

Mar 17, 2021 5:52 pm

Happy Wednesday, Wise Owl Nation!

It's that time again, that time when I have found enough cool new tools I actually like enough to share with the most important group of people, you.

In addition to discussing the tools, I also talk about my thought process around why I use these tools, why they have stuck with me, and what I look for when searching out new tools.

There are a lot of links in this issue, and I recommend you at least check out each of the tools I discuss below. You might just find something you didn't know you were looking for.

Let's get into it.

You can find all past issues (including this one) here.

🧠 Wisdom Tips of The Week: Upgrade Your Tools

My new favorite productivity tool - Sunsama

Before I hype you up and make you want this thing, just know it is not free. To some of you, that may be prohibitive, but to many of you, it won't matter and will be totally worth it.

When it comes to tools, and especially tools that help me manage daily tasks, I am normally not that impressed. I've used them all.

Or, well, I thought I had used them all. Then I found this app recommended in another newsletter I read frequently. As cliche as these next few words are, they're true. It's been a game-changer for me.

My primary issue with productivity tools is that, while they are usually great, they don't give me a constant reason to return to them. It takes a monumental effort to create a habit around them because my normal workflow does not require me to use them as much as my calendar, email, or chat tools do.

Well, Sunsama integrates with Gmail, Google Calendar, Asana, Notion, Trello, Slack, Github, Jira, Todoist.

So, what ends up happening is that I now go to Sunsama when I need to look at, edit, or review both my google calendar and my Gmail. This ends up causing me to look at my task list again, which has the benefit of cueing me to get more tasks done.

It has features that I used to love using but stopped because, as I said before, I get tired of using ten different tools to manage my work.

For example, each task has a focus mode, an estimated time to complete, and a task timer.

To put it plainly, this tool is a combination of multiple other tools I use and has dramatically improved my ability to focus on what I need to get done each day. It only works as well as it does because it is one app I can go to for my calendar, email, and task list.

It has a desktop app, a phone app, and a browser app. I am notorious for ignoring apps that annoy me and I have used Sunsama for 14-days now and found myself coming back to it more and more.

The Return-A-Book and Plus Catalog features of Audible Premium Plus

Earlier this week I was on a call with two of my close friends. One of them had hit a wall regarding their book reading. Their issue was that they had run out of Audible credits and didn't know if they should just start buying more audiobooks, start listening to a podcast, or just listen to music on their way to work.

They had the Audible Premium Plus membership and had overlooked the most potent feature of this subscription - you can return books.

Seriously. It is one of the features that makes this subscription so much more valuable than the price you pay to access it. You can return every single book you listen to for another one. It's like an advanced library card.

The Plus Catalog:

The second potent feature of audibles premium plus subscription is the plus catalog. This is a large catalog of books you get access to for free as part of your subscription.

Now, this is less of a big deal to me than the ability to return books for other books, because that feature lets me recycle books repeatedly at no additional cost. Even so, the plus catalog is always growing and recently added my favorite fiction series "Cradle" to it, so that is pretty cool.

Regardless, Audible is a tool that has value that far exceeds its cost.

🥑 Health Tool of The Week: EverlyWell

To put it plainly, EverlyWell sells at-home testing kits.

Personally, I find this very useful. I have genetically high cholesterol, and instead of going to the doctor multiple times a year to see if the diet and exercise regimen I am doing is keeping my cholesterol in check, I just order Everlywell's cholesterol kits to keep track of how I am doing. It saves me drive time to the doctor, wait time waiting on the doctor, and gives me a second opinion on things.

Don't underestimate the power of second opinions.

A few examples of the testing kits you can get sent to your home:

  • COVID-19
  • Food Sensitivity
  • Vitamin D & Inflammation
  • Testosterone
  • All the STDs
  • Cholesterol and Lipids

I could keep listing them. They offer basically every kind of test a health-conscious millennial like me could ask for. Moreover, they send it to my house so I don't have to go to my doctor for an appointment.

Again, the cost of buying health testing kits might be prohibitive for some of you reading this, but there is a lot of value in getting a consistent baseline on some of your blood markers.

Even if you don't ever try them, at least check out their website and think about how you can get a better understanding of your health.

💲 Wealth Tip of The Week: Most of the crypto tools I use

Surprise - it's crypto tools.

The Bankless Podcast: This is a link to the bankless podcast on Spotify. Start from the very beginning and learn why I am so positive about the power of Crypto and Ethereum in particular. You can find the podcast easily on the internet, but I am linking to episode 1 on Spotify for your convenience.

Buy your first ETH or BTC:

  • On Coinbase - this is the easiest starting place for the newest beginners
  • On Gemini - Another great option founded by the Winklevoss brothers. They are based out of New York.
  • On Kraken - Kraken has a bit of a harder user interface, but they already have ETH staking enabled with the push of a single button.

BlockFi - Earn interest on your crypto. Currently, you can earn 6% interest on BTC, 5.25% interest on ETH, and a whopping 8.6% on stable coins like USDC.

Use the referral code b09f24fd to support the newsletter.

Argent Wallet - This is the best mobile wallet for Ethereum, Defi, and all things on the Ethereum network, including staking. They even have plans to implement Layer 2 to remove network fees.

Ethhub - this is a weekly newsletter that lists out all the interesting news, articles, and tweets that have happened in Crypto that week. It's free and awesome.

Ethdashboard - A simple dashboard to look at various metrics in the ethereum space. I mainly use this as a quick tool to check ETH gas fees.

Cointracker - this is one of the better tools for tracking all of your various crypto across all of the various wallets, exchanges, etc. You can also use them to do your crypto taxes each year.

Metamask - this is a crypto wallet that you can access from your browser and allows you to easily interact with blockchain apps online.
