🦉 WoW #83 - Do Fewer Things Wrong 🦉

Aug 25, 2021 6:52 pm

Happy Wednesday, Wise Owl Nation!

This week I write to you from the sunny beaches of Florida!

Every five years or so my extended family all meets in Florida for a joint family vacation.

Usually, there are anywhere between 15-20 people all packed into a huge beach house, and this time the only thing different is that the beach house is massive and is designed to house 15-20 people comfortably.

Again, I am told I can just "take a break" for a week and not write to you all, but wisdom doesn't take a break, so neither do I.

This will be a shorter issue though.

This week we discuss:

  • Do fewer things wrong
  • Vacations and health
  • Saving money for large purchases

Let's get into it.

You can find all past issues (including this one) here.

🧠 Wisdom Tip(s) of The Week: Do Fewer Things Wrong

In my life, I am always looking for ways I can improve myself. So far in my life I am usually looking for new things I can try or do that will improve the quality of my mind, body, and bank account.

What I have come to realize over time, though, is that oftentimes instead of doing "more things right" we can improve the most by doing "fewer things wrong."

When it comes to improvement it is often more important to look for things to eliminate, than looking for things to add.

This concept encompasses all areas of self-improvement.

  • For productivity, stop adding more items to your to-do list, and instead remove the lower priority tasks
  • Instead of trying to earn more, try spending less
  • Instead of trying to add more exercise time, try eating fewer crappy foods
  • In poker, instead of trying to play more hands correctly (by volume) try to play fewer hands incorrectly.
  • In golf, instead of trying to drive the ball further, focus on always driving the ball straight.

💪🏻 Health Thought of The Week: Vacations

I am on vacation until September 6th. In the past, as an American, the longest vacations I ever took were usually around one week.

That is not long enough. Period.

I feel like I am just starting to finish decompressing after one week.

Two-week vacations should be the standard minimum.

One week to rest, and one week to recover.

That makes sense to me. On Wednesday next week, I will be at the beginning of my second week of vacation, so I will be able to write more about this two-week theory, but I already know that one week is not long enough.

From my understanding, holidays and vacations that extend beyond one week are commonplace in Europe and other parts of the world.

Well, that is what I am trying. I've already seen myself sleeping really well, being more active, and enjoying myself overall to a greater degree.

Try it, if you're able, and see how your health responds.

🤑 Wealth Thought of The Week: Saving for Big Purchases

When you start to succeed at building wealth, I have found that it can be hard to part with some of that hard saved money.

Just keep in mind the purpose and point of saving your money.

To eventually spend it. Money on its own is nothing. Money only achieves value when it can be exchanged for something.

If you save several thousand dollars to go on a vacation, spend that money willingly and happily! That is what that money was saved for!

In fact, saving for a big purchase is far, FAR, healthier than buying that big purchase on credit, and then stressing about paying it off over time. Front-load the effort so you can truly enjoy the reward.

Ethereum Stats:

Total ETH burned - 92,000 ETH (or $290 million)

ETH burned in the last week - 31,547 ETH !!!! 😱

Avg ETH burn per minute - 3.19 ETH/min

My favorite website for watching the ETH 🔥 is ultrasound.money.

The Bankless Podcast: This is a link to the bankless podcast on Spotify. Start from the very beginning and learn why I am so positive about the power of Crypto and Ethereum in particular. You can find the podcast easily on the internet, but I am linking to episode 1 on Spotify for your convenience.

Buy your first ETH or BTC:

  • On Coinbase - this is the easiest starting place for the newest beginners
  • On Gemini - Another great option founded by the Winklevoss brothers. They are based out of New York.
  • On Kraken - Kraken has a bit of a harder user interface, but they already have ETH staking enabled with the push of a single button.

Earn interest on your crypto

  • BlockFi - Currently, you can earn 4% interest on BTC, 4% interest on ETH, and a whopping 7.5% on stable coins like USDC. Use the referral code b09f24fd to support the newsletter.

Other tools:

  • Argent Wallet - This is the best mobile wallet for Ethereum, Defi, and all things on the Ethereum network, including staking. They even have plans to implement Layer 2 to remove network fees.
  • Ethhub - this is a weekly newsletter that lists out all the interesting news, articles, and tweets that have happened in Crypto that week. It's free and awesome.
  • Ethdashboard - A simple dashboard to look at various metrics in the ethereum space. I mainly use this as a quick tool to check ETH gas fees.
  • Cointracker - this is one of the better tools for tracking all of your various crypto across all of the various wallets, exchanges, etc. You can also use them to do your crypto taxes each year.
  • Metamask - this is a crypto wallet that you can access from your browser and allows you to easily interact with blockchain apps online.
