Quote of the week:

image

How easy is it to let outside forces poison the calmness of our thoughts?

Why do we let that shit happen?

This, like many stoic quotes is so important to reread and remember.

You are sovereign over your mind. No outside events can decide how you think.

If your boss is rude. Not your problem.

You lose your job? Not the end of the world. (especially if you have read my articles on wealth building in last weeks issue :P)

You are alive. You are privileged enough to have a device powerful enough to receive this email. You are the shit, and you have a beautiful mind.

Treat it well. Don't let outside events alter the way you think. None of that shit matters in the long run.

That quote led me to the current read this week.

Current Reads - Stillness Is The Key by Ryan Holiday

image

Ryan Holiday is one of my favorite writers.

He lives in my city, quit his lucrative 9-5 job in his early 20's and said "f*ck it" and started writing books.

In many ways he is my spirit animal.

His book "The Obstacle Is The Way" introduced me to stoicism and helped me keep my brain together when my fiance was in a coma two years ago, and has helped ground me through her recovery.

His newest book is a continuation of that series on stoicism and is called "Stillness is the Key."

Why this book is awesome:

I was not intending to read this book for a couple of weeks, but lately my life has been extra chaotic. I'm a big believe in reading books that solve problems you are dealing with right now, so when this book kept winking at me from my bookshelf, I couldn't help myself.

It was just the medicine I needed.

You should read this book if:

  • You hate distractions
  • You want to learn to think better
  • You're tired of feeling out of control or angry
  • You want to know what Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan did wrong
  • You want more clarity
  • You just want to be a better you

I won't get too personal, but like I said, I picked this up in a time of need, and it came through in a big way.

Tips or Tools of the week: Wisdom, Health or Wealth

Each week I share either three tips or three tools that will help you become wiser, healthier, and wealthier.

Wisdom tip of the week: Teach the topic you want to learn

"The person who learns the most in any classroom is the teacher."

The best way to truly learn something is to teach it, do it, or build it. If you want to ingrain into your mind how to do something, talk about it with other people.

Think if this like going to practice for a sport. If you want to be great at basketball, you have to practice shooting a basketball. The same thing applies to knowledge. If you want to deeply understand why cryptocurrency is 1000% going to survive and thrive, you need to talk to others about crypto.

Let yourself be challenged. Let others poke holes in your logic so you can go back, learn more, and fill those holes.

The word "teach" can be stretched pretty thin as well. Teaching can mean writing an article on a topic, or building a product around an idea. Learn, create, do.

Health tip of the week: Go for a walk

First of all, yes walking is healthy.

Most of us don't move enough as it is, so we need as much movement as we can get.

Some of you workout multiple times a day, and to you I say, go for a walk to cool off!

But second of all, walking is really good for thinking.

I almost made it my wisdom tip of the week.

When I have trouble working through a problem, I go for a walk.

When I get annoyed and need fresh air, I go for a walk.

When I need to close my damn exercise ring on my Apple Watch, I go for a walk.

Usually I can work through whatever issue I'm dealing with and come up with a solution.

Sometime's I don't figure it out, but I always feel a lot better after the walk.

Bonus! Health tip of the week #2: Avoid the Coronavirus

Normally I don't let epidemic scares get me riled up, but I know a lot of nurses and doctors, and they seem pretty serious about this one.

So, in honor of overwhelming you with common sense, please remember these helpful tips for avoiding the plague:

  • Embrace antisocial behavior with people that are sick. Avoid them.
  • Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds like your mother taught you.
  • Stop touching your face. Weirdo.
  • Stay home when you're sick. Don't be "that guy."
  • If you start to feel incredibly awful, don't be a tough guy and hide from medical professionals. Go to an urgent care and get some help.

Wealth tip of the week: Let Financial Freedom be enough

I don't know of any millionaires that read this newsletter, but if I am wrong, and you all exist, hey!

This applies to you too.

Financial Freedom is the point where the money you have, whether it be in assets or other investments, is earning more for you each month than your total expenses.

This is the point in which you no longer need to work to pay your bills.

At this stage you have officially acquired "F*ck You Money."

My wealth advice this week is to let that be enough. Now do shit you love doing.

Write a book, or learn to make art.

Maybe join a Dungeons and Dragons campaign like you've always wanted.

Don't let net worth dictate your self-worth.

Money is a tool to achieve a means.

You now have enough money, so don't let it stay a focus.

New Articles

Every week I publish new articles on Medium.

Not every article I write will pertain to wisdom, health, and wealth, but most will!

New or relevant articles I publish will be included here.

A Few Newsletter Ideas I am Pondering

I am always thinking about ways to make this newsletter more valuable to all of you. I want it to be, at the very least, the one email you look forward to opening each week.

  • A giveaway of all the books I have recommended here on Wise Owl Wednesday at the end of March
  • A section on Cryptocurrency called the "Crypto Corner"
  • A video or Audio component of Wise Owl Wednesdays for those of you who want to listen to what the newsletter says or here my riff on various sections.
  • A more personal look into my journey and what I am experimenting with right now including an open look into my habits, struggles, finances, etc.

What do you think about these ideas? Respond to this email and let me know.

Share The Love, and Help Me Help You!

I’d recommend the book boundaries if you haven’t read it. I’d be happy to loan you mine. It is very biblical but the content is something you can apply to your daily Life and routines. I truly think it will allow you to be a more successful person by teaching you to identify and recognize specific detrimental behaviors within yourself and others.
