Wise Owl Wednesday #21 - Failure & Mistakes

Jun 17, 2020 7:50 pm

Happy Wednesday, Wise Owl Nation.

Today I want to talk about failure.

For the most part, many of us have poor relationships with failure.

We are scared of it. Scared of the shame of having to admit we failed or made a mistake.

Failure can be an intense topic, but failure is one of the most important parts of improving your mind, body, and bank account. It is both inevitable and a necessity.

So in today's email I want to try to break some of the stigma surrounding failure and talk through some of my own major failures.

I have failed spectacularly, and through those failures I have achieved the greatest growth.

Your failures will define you, but it's still up to you to determine what that definition is.

Let's get into it.

You can find all past issues (including this one) here.

Tips or Tools of the week: Wisdom, Health and Wealth

Each week I share either three tips or three tools that will help you become wiser, healthier, and wealthier.

Wisdom tip of the week: Befriend Failure: Learn from mistakes

There is a shame that is associated with failure.

This shame is not unique to the United States, but it is a more modernized concept.

The irony of this shame around failure is that to succeed at anything, you have to fail.

No one achieves perfection on the first try.

There are no overnight successes. Literally there are zero overnight successes. Everyone has a back story, and everyone that achieves anything of substance has struggled and failed for it.

So fall in love with failure, because it will show you what does not work.

Then you can learn, iterate, and try again.

Thomas Edison is a household name because he fell in love with failure. He failed until he succeeded.

Ulysses S. Grant failed over and over again to get an upper hand against the Confederate armies during the Civil War.

He kept trying, learned from his mistakes, and eventually played a major part in ending slavery and reuniting the States of America.

Fall in love with your failures - they just want to help you to succeed.

Health tip of the week: Figure out what doesn't work

To get good sleep you need to figure out the best evening routine to wind down your body and mind.

You need to maintain a dark room, and wake up at a consistent time each day.

To eat nutritious foods you need a process by which you keep your pantry stocked.

Then you need to know how to cook foods that you enjoy.

A variety is helpful so you don't get bored, and find a way to fight off sugar cravings is essential.

Then there is exercise.

How do you convince your tired-ass-self to exercise and strengthen your body?

One attempt at a time.

In my experience getting healthy is mentally harder than gaining wealth.

For some people going to the gym works best.

For others it's playing sports.

For me, in my current place in life, it's swinging kettle bells around and then going for a long walk at sunrise.

I've tried the gym, and right now it's not for me.

I've tried sports, and right now I can't spare the time to be consistent.

I can wake up each day, swing kettle bells for 10 minutes, then go for a 30 minute walk before the Sun rises high enough to roast the world.

Keep trying to find what works for you. The only way to do that is to try and fail repeatedly.

Wealth tip of the week: My biggest wealth failure

I once lost $12,000 on a single stock. It was between 2014-2016.

Some marketer with great writing skills convinced me that a certain stock was going to go up.

My naive self believed. Then the stock dropped 50%.

So I bought more because I'm getting it at a great deal!

Then it dropped another 50%.

It was the most expensive crash course on detecting bullshit I've ever heard of. But it worked.

Now I don't allow my emotions to dictate how I invest my money.

What I learned from this:

  • There are no get-rich-quick schemes
  • Other people are way less capable than they seem
  • Investing is a long, slow process that should be automated

Where I am now:

  • Since then I've bought and sold several houses (I actually really don't enjoy real estate at all)
  • I am 100% student loan free and carry no debt on my credit cards
  • I'm able to care for my disabled fiance without needing help from family. (They still help because they are awesome, but my fiance's health is not dependent on that aid).
  • I've invested heavily in assets that will one day give me complete financial freedom.

Now we turn our focus to wisdom.

Introducing "The Obstacle Is The Way" by Ryan Holiday.

What better way to work on mental and psychological freedom than to read one of the best books I've ever read on dealing with the bullshit of life.

if you want to learn how to overcome life's bullshit, let stress wash away from you, and to become better because of the struggle, this book is for you.

The book is broken into three parts, so I will be covering each of those three parts over the rest of June.
