🦉 WoW #64 - Milestones and 2021 Goal Check-In 🦉

Apr 14, 2021 5:46 pm

Happy Wednesday, Wise Owl Nation!

About four months ago, on December 30th, I wrote the 49th issue of Wise Owl Wednesday.

That issue focused on the progress I had made in 2020, and the goals I set for myself going into 2021. We are now 25% of the way through the year, and it's time to look at our goals again to see the progress that we've made.

It's time to check for milestones.

In issue #49 I laid out the following goals:

  1. Get my fantasy fiction focused YouTube channel monetized
  2. Win large poker tournaments and build a larger poker bankroll
  3. Stream poker, crypto/finance discussions, etc on Twitch
  4. Get lucky and watch Crypto go so wild the interest/staking returns alone replace my salary
  5. Finish and publish the fantasy fiction novel I am currently writing
  6. Establish a better system for my health - This means a system around exercising more and eating better on a daily basis.

So how am I doing?

1) Get my fantasy fiction focused YouTube channel monetized - The YouTube channel isn't monetized yet, but it is really close. To get a monetized YouTube channel you need to meet two criteria.

  • Have over 4,000 hours watched on your channel
  • Have at least 1,000 subscribers

I currently have over 5,000 hours watched and around 875 subscribers. I am really close, and to achieve this goal in the next few months I just need to keep making quality Fantasy Fiction content.

2) Win large poker tournaments and build a larger poker bankroll - This past weekend I won my first large poker tournament!!! This is a huge deal. It is extremely difficult to win a tournament with several hundred people, and on Saturday, April 10th, one day after my birthday, I won a tournament of 364 entrants!

The buy in was only $4.40, but that is the point of the newsletter this week. Milestones. Start somewhere, get feedback, improve, keep going.

3) Stream poker, crypto/finance discussions, etc on Twitch - This is the main goal I haven't made much tangible progress towards, but that isn't a huge deal because I have made intangible progress. The YouTube channel is growing, and I am now skilled enough at poker to make deep runs into tournaments.

So I am getting time in front of the camera, growing an audience, as well as honing my poker skills so that my results could be entertaining to a viewer.

4) Get lucky and watch Crypto go so wild the interest/staking returns alone replace my salary - Looking back I don't really thing this was a good goal, as it doesn't really require me to do anything new.

What I have done is push Crypto education to this newsletter on a weekly basis. Many of you have earned massive profits because of this and I couldn't be more thrilled by that.

This newsletter aims to provide value every week, and on the Crypto front at least, I am succeeding.

5) Finish and publish the fantasy fiction novel I am currently writing - Well, I am four chapters in, but I don't write fiction consistently enough. One of my close friends, Lee, gives me shit about this on a weekly basis.

This is me publicly acknowledging that I need to do better, and with writing, each new chapter is a milestone. I need to finish chapter 4 so I can move on to chapter 5.

6) Establish a better system for my health - This means a system around exercising more and eating better on a daily basis.

Not sure whether I can claim a huge amount of progress here, but I have improved my health and the systems around my health, I just haven't seen any massive improvements, yet.

I have:

  • started cooking quite a bit more
  • gone on far more walks
  • consistently taken vitamins and supplements on a daily basis
  • taken the right tests to establish a baseline for my bloodwork

If I were to give myself a grade for this quarterly review I would give myself a solid B+.

How are you all doing so far this year?

In the rest of the newsletter I am going to go over:

  • The process for success
  • Where you work effects your health
  • Crypto news and updates

🧠 Wisdom Focus Tip(s) of The Week: The Process

This section will be short and sweet this week.

The process is simple. It can be applied to any goal or desired result.

  1. Decide what you want to accomplish
  2. Try different ways of achieving it until you find something that works
  3. Do what works.
  4. Do less of what does not work.
  5. Don't stop doing what works until it stops working.
  6. Repeat step 2.

The above process was inspired by a quote from James Clear.

🥑 Health Thoughts of The Week: You're supposed to like where you work

I don't talk about my day job very often in this newsletter because I try to keep that world and this world somewhat separate, but sometimes a concept overlaps to completely that I feel obligated to bring it into this newsletter.

The concept in my mind this week is the concept that your workplace should be a place you like to be.

Is it odd to be talking about this concept in the health section of this newsletter? No way. Your health is directly linked to how healthy or unhealthy your work life is. I won't go into work-life balance here, because that is a completely different topic, but the excitement or dread you have when thinking about work plays a pretty big role on your overall health.

Earlier in this newsletter I mentioned a friend of mine that constantly reminds me I need to write more fiction. That friend recently made a massive career change.

To put it plainly, he hated his old job. He was underpaid, under-appreciated, taken for granted, and at times verbally abused by his boss. This friend is a part of a weekly mastermind call and basically every week he would talk about how his toxic work environment was effecting his overall health.

This is a guy that is pretty close to being able to run a marathon in less than four-hours. His health and well-being are high priorities for him.

So when he would come into our calls each week looking more and more haggard, we implored him to find a new job! Because holy shit, your job should not have such a negative impact on your health.

This was back at the end of 2020, and one of his goals for 2021 was to get a new job that he looked forward to doing.

Even in a pandemic economy, he was able to find a new job with a better salary, better work culture, and most importantly of all, a boss that cares about his future.

Now he comes into our weekly meetings with updates on his marathon training. He sends updates daily in our discord server about his running progress. His mind and body are once again focused on his health, not on how toxic his job is.

How you feel about your job matters. If you hate where you work, take action. Update your resume, send out job applications, and hit up your network for opportunities.

They are out there. I promise you. Especially in 2021 where so many people are getting vaccinated each day. At some point the world will open back up and opportunities will be abundant.

💲 Wealth/Crypto Thoughts of The Week: A Lot of Crypto News

Fidelity, Coinbase, and Square form crypto council to lobby policy makers

This new council was formed with a mission of demonstrating the "transformational promise of crypto and communicate its benefits to policymakers, regulators, and people around the globe." according to the Wall Street Journal.

What does this mean for you? These major crypto representatives are hoping to educate capital hill on crypto and help drive and form quality policy around crypto. Crypto is still in the early stages of development, much like the internet was in the 90's. Back then, not many people truly understand internet, what it meant for them, and where it was going.

David Letterman famously interviewed Bill Gates about the internet, and in hindsight it is painfully obvious how ignorant everyone was. It's a two-minute video, but well worth watching.

Coinbase reports an estimated $1.8 billion in total revenue for Q1 2021

In case you haven't heard, Coinbase is going to be doing its IPO (initial public offering TODAY. So there are a lot of eyes on the Coinbase financials.

What does this mean for you? Well, the current crypto rally the last two days is being caused by the hype surrounding this Coinbase IPO.

The Bankless Podcast: This is a link to the bankless podcast on Spotify. Start from the very beginning and learn why I am so positive about the power of Crypto and Ethereum in particular. You can find the podcast easily on the internet, but I am linking to episode 1 on Spotify for your convenience.

Buy your first ETH or BTC:

  • On Coinbase - this is the easiest starting place for the newest beginners
  • On Gemini - Another great option founded by the Winklevoss brothers. They are based out of New York.
  • On Kraken - Kraken has a bit of a harder user interface, but they already have ETH staking enabled with the push of a single button.

Earn interest on your crypto

  • BlockFi - Currently, you can earn 6% interest on BTC, 5.25% interest on ETH, and a whopping 8.6% on stable coins like USDC. Use the referral code b09f24fd to support the newsletter.

Other tools:

  • Argent Wallet - This is the best mobile wallet for Ethereum, Defi, and all things on the Ethereum network, including staking. They even have plans to implement Layer 2 to remove network fees.
  • Ethhub - this is a weekly newsletter that lists out all the interesting news, articles, and tweets that have happened in Crypto that week. It's free and awesome.
  • Ethdashboard - A simple dashboard to look at various metrics in the ethereum space. I mainly use this as a quick tool to check ETH gas fees.
  • Cointracker - this is one of the better tools for tracking all of your various crypto across all of the various wallets, exchanges, etc. You can also use them to do your crypto taxes each year.
  • Metamask - this is a crypto wallet that you can access from your browser and allows you to easily interact with blockchain apps online.
