🦉 WoW #110 - Yearly Goals Update + Learning Resources 🦉

Mar 02, 2022 2:33 pm

Happy Wednesday, Wise Owl Nation!

It's officially March everywhere in the world!

Time for an update on my OKRs (goals)!

I am working on a few larger ideas I want to write about in the next few weeks, but they aren't ready yet, so an update issue this week sounds like a solid idea.

We have one month left in the first quarter of the year, so it's a good time to check in on my progress and see what areas I need to step it up.

I will also be sharing some learning resources I make use of each week to continue learning even while keeping an active and productive work schedule.

Let's get into it.

You can find all past issues (including this one) here.

🦉 Wise Owl Thought(s) of The Week: OKR Updates

We are now two-thirds of the way through the first quarter of the year, meaning I have one month left to finish the Q1 Key Results I had for each of my objectives.

As friends/loyal readers of my weekly ramblings, I am obligated to share my progress with you on a semi-regular basis. I am holding myself accountable to all of you, so thank you for taking the time to read these updates!

As a reminder my 2022 objectives are:

  • Achieve and maintain a body fat percentage of 15%
  • Build a Poker Bankroll to $30,000
  • Write 30 chapters in my Fantasy Fiction Novel
  • Publish 53 YouTube videos

To make these rather audacious objectives manageable I broke down the milestones I wanted to achieve by April 1, which marks the end of Q1.

✅ = On Track

❌ = Off Track

Achieve and maintain a Body Fat Percentage of 15%

Key Results -

  • Go to a fitness class 25x (roughly 2x per week) ❌
  • Walk 10-miles a week ✅
  • Record my weight/bfp in Noom app 5x a week ❌

Instead of going to a fitness class I am building an at home gym in my garage. The travel time to and from a place is so annoying to me right now that I am defaulting to just doing pushups, kettle bell swings, and walking instead of going to a class. I am doing this piecemeal so that I can familiarize and use each of the tools I buy.

Walking 10-miles a week has proven to be too easy, so in Q2 I am bumping that up to 20-miles a week. Seriously.

As for weighing myself daily, I've just dropped the ball, so I am calling this out to remind myself to get back on the scale frequently. I have continued to slowly lose weight and body fat %, but the lack of focus on this area has made my progress too slow to achieve my objective by the end of the year. So I am self-correcting now.

Build Poker Bankroll to $30,000

Key Results -

  • Play 10 hours of cash games per week ❌
  • Reach the $5,000 bankroll mark by April 1 ✅
  • Complete the "Advanced Cash Game" course by April 1 ✅

I have not been able to work ten full hours of cash games into each week while simultaneously studying cash games so much, however, my poker play has been really good lately and I have had five profitable sessions in a row.

My current poker bankroll stands at $3,093.21 which is about 62% of the way there. I have one more month to make the remaining $1900, but I expect I will have more time to play as I get closer and closer to finishing the Advanced Cash Game Course I purchased last year.

I also expect the amount of time I play each week to increase as I get more and more comfortable playing longer sessions with multiple active tables. Also, I think in Q2 I will have a Key Results based on total number of hands played instead of hours spent playing. Not sure yet.

Write 30 chapters in my Fantasy Fiction Novel

Key Results -

  • Write 5 chapters by April 1 ✅
  • Write 10,000 new words by April 1 ✅
  • Share new chapters with accountability partners every Monday morning ✅

This was always going to be the hardest of the objectives for me to accomplish because of the amount of effort it takes to write pure fiction. The desire to procrastinate or work on other objectives instead of doing this is always hard to resist.

However, with the help of my accountability partners I have finished two new chapters in February, with a goal of finishing the third by Friday of this week.

Each of these chapters is around 2,000 words so my total wordcount for this year is around 5,000. Plus, all of this progress was made during February so that is a positive sign for me.

Publish 53 YouTube Videos

Key Results:

  • Publish 10 videos by April 1 ❌
  • Build a backlog of 30 video ideas by April 1 ✅
  • Create a list of the top 15 authors I would like to interview by April 1 ✅

Despite having published only 3 videos this year, I am not too worried about publishing 7 videos in March, since there is going to be a series of videos I am making about an upcoming book.

I have made a backlog of 15 or so videos and have a list of 7ish Authors I would love to interview, so most of the legwork has been done, I just need to sit in front of a camera and talk about stuff I love.

Not a big deal - just need to get 2 videos out per week for the rest of the month.

How are you doing on your goals this year? Shoot me an email and let me know, I would love to hear from you!

A Few of My Favorite Places to Learn on the Internet

📰 The Daily Gwei - This is a free daily substack newsletter about the goings on of Ethereum and other areas of Crypto. It is short, concise and makes me feel a little less confused about the every changing world of crypto.

🎧 The Podcast Reader - A cool concept. They listen to a ton of podcasts and then write about their favorite ideas and thoughts. Think of this is a badass content aggregator that can help expose you to new and interesting podcasts.

🎵 Speechify - I've recommended this quite a lot recently, and for good reason. In the past month I have listened to 1.6 million words on this app. Seriously. I use this tool to read email newsletters during the day, or blog articles from anywhere on the web.

🏋🏼 GymCrafter - I have decided to build a gym in my garage, and this site is the place I keep going to to learn where to start.

This concludes our issue this week, I hope it gave you some perspective or injected a little motivation into your life!

If it helped, let me know! I read every newsletter response I receive, and I absolutely love hearing from all of you. This newsletter is for you, so I need your help to make it as great as possible.

If you'd like to show me some love for writing all this free stuff, you can always buy me a coffee.

More Resources

I will be adding to this section over time as we find resources that will help you all.

Crypto Resources

The Bankless Podcast: This is a link to the bankless podcast on Spotify. Start from the very beginning and learn why I am so positive about the power of Crypto and Ethereum in particular. You can find the podcast easily on the internet, but I am linking to episode 1 on Spotify for your convenience.

Buy your first ETH or BTC:

  • On Coinbase - this is the easiest starting place for the newest beginners
  • On Gemini - Another great option founded by the Winklevoss brothers. They are based out of New York.
  • On Kraken - Kraken has a bit of a harder user interface, but they already have ETH staking enabled with the push of a single button.

Earn interest on your crypto

  • BlockFi - Currently, you can earn 4% interest on BTC, 5% interest on ETH, and a whopping 8.5% on stable coins like USDC. Use the referral code b09f24fd to support the newsletter. BlockFi is currently not accepting new customers for its Crypto Interest Savings accounts as they transition to a new product called BlockFi Yield.

Other tools:

  • Argent Wallet - This is the best mobile wallet for Ethereum, Defi, and all things on the Ethereum network, including staking. They even have plans to implement Layer 2 to remove network fees.
  • Ethhub - this is a weekly newsletter that lists out all the interesting news, articles, and tweets that have happened in Crypto that week. It's free and awesome.
  • Ethdashboard - A simple dashboard to look at various metrics in the ethereum space. I mainly use this as a quick tool to check ETH gas fees.
  • Cointracker - this is one of the better tools for tracking all of your various crypto across all of the various wallets, exchanges, etc. You can also use them to do your crypto taxes each year.
  • Metamask - this is a crypto wallet that you can access from your browser and allows you to easily interact with blockchain apps online.
