🦉 WoW #118 - Time for a Tune Up 🦉

Apr 27, 2022 1:17 pm

Happy Wednesday, Wise Owl Nation!

I often find myself circling back to old topics as I learn more or need to "practice what I preach."

The past week I've had quite a bit more time than usual to think, rest, and put my daily life through a tune up.

This week's newsletter is a quick recap of some of the concepts I am tuning up in my day-to-day life.

This week we cover the following with a few words and a few images:

  • Do it for future you
  • Your environment matters
  • Process Oriented > Results Oriented
  • Consistency matters the most

Let's get into it.

You can find all past issues (including this one) here.

🦉🧠 Wise Owl Thought(s) of The Week: Time for a Tune Up

No matter how on-point we've been lately, we can always use a tune up.

Review these topics and perform a bit of a health check on yourself, your environment, and your processes.

Do it for Future You

"Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today." - Benjamin Franklin

Lately, when I don't want to do something, I think to myself - "What would future me want?" Future me doesn't want to do this shit either! If I can get this task, workout, etc out of the way now, future me will be set up for success.

It's a powerful tool, friends.

Don't put the you of tomorrow in a stressful situation. Not cool.

This concept is powerful in all areas of life.

I have had the following conversation with myself when driving home maybe a hundred times over the last few months.

"I'm hungry. Fast food sounds amazing."

"Sure, but I do have food at home."

"Yeah but I have to cook that myself."

"True, but tomorrow I'll be really happy I didn't spend that $10 and eat all those extra calories."

"F*ck. I may lose now, but I win tomorrow."

Sometimes I stop at Chik-fil-a anyway, but most times I don't.

A few things to do today to help yourself tomorrow:

  • Learning anything
  • Eating nutritious foods
  • Exercise
  • Meditate
  • Get more than 7 hours of sleep tonight
  • Do this dishes now
  • Empty the litterbox
  • Plan tomorrow tonight

A few things to avoid today to help yourself tomorrow:

  • Over eating
  • Over drinking (caffeine, alchohol, etc)
  • Spending money on stupid shit (you know what I am talking about)
  • Staying up later than you should

Your Environment Matters

I heard a metaphor yesterday while listening to a podcast. The metaphor is exceedingly simple, but it really hits home for me.

Can a plant survive in any environment? No.

Can a plant survive in many environments? Yes

Can a plant thrive in many environments? No.

Can a plant thrive in specific environments? Yes.

A plant is a much simpler organism than you are, but environment matters for growth.

Just like a plant, you operate better in an environment where you aren't stressed and overworked.

Be intentional about the environments you allow yourself in.

Optimize the space around you so you can become optimal yourself.

Process Oriented > Results Oriented

I've had this lesson drilled into me repeatedly in the world of poker.

Just because I won a big hand and made some $$ does not mean that the decisions I made to get there were the right ones. I might have been rewarded by sheer luck.

The inverse is true too, there have been so many times where I did make the right decision and still lost anyway. That's life my friends. What matters though is that over time the process I use to make decisions in poker get better and better, so that overtime, in aggregate, the results will catch up to the well refined process.

This is classic stoic mindset stuff.

Focus on what you can control!

You control the process.

You do not control the results.

Process > Results

Consistency Matters the Most

Have you failed at:

  • making life easier for future you
  • controlling your environment
  • putting process over results

Me too. Keep trying.

These are all skills that can be honed over time with practice and effort.

In all areas of life, consistency is one of the hallmarks of success.

In sports, it's the athletes that can consistently play at their best on gameday that we know and admire.

Those athletes kept their effort consistent throughout their lives striving to get better and better. They perfected their processes, mastered their environment, and took ownership of the present consistently over many years.

When you get a large spark of motivation, use it to establish a habit, routine, or system that will allow you to make consistent progress towards whatever goals you set for yourself.

Have a great week!

This concludes our issue this week, I hope it gave you some perspective or injected a little motivation into your life!

If it helped, let me know! I read every newsletter response I receive, and I absolutely love hearing from all of you. This newsletter is for you, so I need your help to make it as great as possible.

If you'd like to show me some love for writing all this free stuff, you can always buy me a coffee.

More Resources

I will be adding to this section over time as we find resources that will help you all.

Crypto Resources

The Bankless Podcast: This is a link to the bankless podcast on Spotify. Start from the very beginning and learn why I am so positive about the power of Crypto and Ethereum in particular. You can find the podcast easily on the internet, but I am linking to episode 1 on Spotify for your convenience.

Buy your first ETH or BTC:

  • On Coinbase - this is the easiest starting place for the newest beginners
  • On Gemini - Another great option founded by the Winklevoss brothers. They are based out of New York.
  • On Kraken - Kraken has a bit of a harder user interface, but they already have ETH staking enabled with the push of a single button.

Earn interest on your crypto

  • BlockFi - Currently, you can earn 4% interest on BTC, 5% interest on ETH, and a whopping 8.5% on stable coins like USDC. Use the referral code b09f24fd to support the newsletter. BlockFi is currently not accepting new customers from the USA for its Crypto Savings Account. Non-US customers are still welcome.

Other tools:

  • Argent Wallet - This is the best mobile wallet for Ethereum, Defi, and all things on the Ethereum network, including staking. They even have plans to implement Layer 2 to remove network fees.
  • Ethhub - this is a weekly newsletter that lists out all the interesting news, articles, and tweets that have happened in Crypto that week. It's free and awesome.
  • Ethdashboard - A simple dashboard to look at various metrics in the ethereum space. I mainly use this as a quick tool to check ETH gas fees.
  • Cointracker - this is one of the better tools for tracking all of your various crypto across all of the various wallets, exchanges, etc. You can also use them to do your crypto taxes each year.
  • Metamask - this is a crypto wallet that you can access from your browser and allows you to easily interact with blockchain apps online.
