🦉 WoW #113 - Start from Flintstone 🦉

Mar 23, 2022 2:10 pm

Happy Wednesday, Wise Owl Nation!

We're into the back half of March and the world just keeps on turning.

I've been reading about multiple topics, as I do, and have started to notice that the world feels more and more complex. Pandemics, economic supply chain issues, war being shown all over social media, information warfare, cancel culture, Kanye getting banned from Instagram, etc.

Chaos reigns!

Which is why this week I am writing about a concept that values simplifying solutions in favor of getting that solution used over more complicated or complex solutions.

If you could get a solution in one month that solved 60% of your issue, that is better than waiting 6-months to have 90% of your issue solved.

That is what I am writing about today.

Let's get into it.

You can find all past issues (including this one) here.

🦉 Wealthy Owl Thought(s) of The Week: A Flintstone Point of View

If you aren't familiar with the old show "The Flintstones" it was an animated show that ran in the 1960s. The concept was a romanticized stone age where humans recreated modern technology using stone age tools.

For example, they have a car that is powered by Fred Flintstone's feet.

^ See - it's a car! But it's also not a car. You could describe it as a fancy wheelbarrow if you wanted to. The point is it takes the essence of what a car is supposed to be and achieves that result with manual processes.

I like this concept a lot.

My favorite part of this concept is that it can be applied to EVERYTHING.

The concept being taking the fewest steps possible to get something going that immediately adds value.

Examples:

  • Want to start a newsletter? Use Sendfox or substack. All you have to do is write and click send. You can figure everything else out as you go.
  • Want to get into crypto? Keep it as simple as possible and just use Coinbase to buy a little every week. Learn more over time.
  • Want to clean your house more? Start with a room, or even a part of a room and focus on keeping that space clean for a week. Eventually expand the circle of clean.
  • Want to start a YouTube Channel? Record with your phone. You can upload directly to the YouTube app. Learn to edit and improve production quality over time, once you get used to making videos.

Our brains overcomplicate everything. It is too easy to want to start a project and then get overwhelmed at the enormity of that project.

Yesterday afternoon I had a spare 30 minutes. I've been wanting to put my new garage gym together since all the pieces were delivered recently. I hadn't built it yet because I thought it would take forever and had too much going on last week. I also didn't lift weights last week.

So I just started doing what I could for that 30-minutes, which was basically unboxing everything.

I knew seeing everything unboxed and unbuilt would bother me and motivate me to get the rest of work done later last night.

It worked.

Voila! I have a functional squat rack (that also has a pullup bar).

Now that the squat rack is built I have an easy and convenient place to workout.

One win leads to another in a domino effect of awesome!

If consistency is the key to success, then simplicity is the key to consistency.

I like keeping things as simple as possible.

Simple does not always mean easy though, just to be clear.

The Flintstone concept favors simplicity and manually doing things for a while to prioritize getting the value.

What projects have you been over complicating?

How can you simplify that project to get some of it out to the people that could use it right now?

Quote/Meme of the week:

Have a great week!

This concludes our issue this week, I hope it gave you some perspective or injected a little motivation into your life!

If it helped, let me know! I read every newsletter response I receive, and I absolutely love hearing from all of you. This newsletter is for you, so I need your help to make it as great as possible.

If you'd like to show me some love for writing all this free stuff, you can always buy me a coffee.

More Resources

I will be adding to this section over time as we find resources that will help you all.

Crypto Resources

The Bankless Podcast: This is a link to the bankless podcast on Spotify. Start from the very beginning and learn why I am so positive about the power of Crypto and Ethereum in particular. You can find the podcast easily on the internet, but I am linking to episode 1 on Spotify for your convenience.

Buy your first ETH or BTC:

  • On Coinbase - this is the easiest starting place for the newest beginners
  • On Gemini - Another great option founded by the Winklevoss brothers. They are based out of New York.
  • On Kraken - Kraken has a bit of a harder user interface, but they already have ETH staking enabled with the push of a single button.

Earn interest on your crypto

  • BlockFi - Currently, you can earn 4% interest on BTC, 5% interest on ETH, and a whopping 8.5% on stable coins like USDC. Use the referral code b09f24fd to support the newsletter. BlockFi is currently not accepting new customers from the USA for its Crypto Savings Account. International customers are still welcome!

Other tools:

  • Argent Wallet - This is the best mobile wallet for Ethereum, Defi, and all things on the Ethereum network, including staking. They even have plans to implement Layer 2 to remove network fees.
  • Ethhub - this is a weekly newsletter that lists out all the interesting news, articles, and tweets that have happened in Crypto that week. It's free and awesome.
  • Ethdashboard - A simple dashboard to look at various metrics in the ethereum space. I mainly use this as a quick tool to check ETH gas fees.
  • Cointracker - this is one of the better tools for tracking all of your various crypto across all of the various wallets, exchanges, etc. You can also use them to do your crypto taxes each year.
  • Metamask - this is a crypto wallet that you can access from your browser and allows you to easily interact with blockchain apps online.
