🦉 WoW #81 - Coming to you with the Flu 🦉

Aug 11, 2021 6:00 pm

Happy Wednesday, Wise Owl Nation!

I have the flu.

Fortunately, it's not Covid, but it still flatlined me yesterday.

I slept on the couch from 4pm - 8pm, then helped Megan get ready for bed, then passed out in my bed from 9:30pm - 6am.

All of the symptoms I had/have, are flu symptoms, so I know I will be over this inconvenience by tomorrow.

No little flu virus is going to keep me from writing out your weekly dose of wisdom.

It might force me to keep this issue a bit short though 😅.

In this issue:

  • A few thoughts on habits, processed information, and perspective
  • A reminder of what vitamins/supplements I take to try to stay healthy (I def think they helped me not feel like death this morning)
  • A review of one week of EIP-1559 in action and how that has affected ETH

Let's get into it.

You can find all past issues (including this one) here.

🧠 Wisdom Tip(s) of The Week: Some words of wisdom

On Habits:

A habit is so much more than "what" you are doing. It is also where and when you are doing it.

How often do you want to eat lunch around 11 am-1 pm even if you aren't hungry. Or how often do you end up buying more than what you wanted to buy when you went into Target?

So when creating a new habit, make sure to pick the time and place you are going to do it.

It's far easier to wake up and know "I am writing Wise Owl Wednesday at 6:30 am in my office with a single cup of coffee." than it is to decide each week when and where I am going to write this newsletter.

If you know what, when, and where, all you need to do is show up.

On Processed Information:

Processed Food, like food you can get at a fast-food restaurant, will not improve your health in the long term, and will very likely damage your health.

Processed Information will do the same thing to your mind. So spend time finding better sources of information.

An example of processed information is a tweet, a biased mainstream media source, or a news article with a clickbait title.

Consuming information about an event or a subject that covers the entire topic without adding opinion or bias is what you are looking for.

Because a mind filled with garbage information will struggle to think well.

On Perspective:

This follows the processed information topic pretty closely this week.

Different meanings, perspectives, and understanding can be derived from the same events.

If you look for evidence of how the world is screwed, you are going to find evidence for how the world is screwed.

Look for evidence on how the world is improving, and you will find that evidence too.

So choose an explanation that lifts you up.

Choose an explanation that fills you with hope, motivation, or inspiration.

💪🏻 Health Thought of The Week: The supplements I take on a daily basis

I've been taking supplements for most of my adult life.

Over time what supplements I take has evolved and changed over time.

During the pandemic I focused on taking the following supplements:

  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin D3
  • Vitamin K
  • Zinc
  • Quercetin
  • A mushroom blend for Immune health

All of these vitamins help boost the human immune system, as well as help the body stay strong against viruses.

About a week and a half ago I came across a cool new product from the Austin health company Onnit.

They have plenty of supplements they sell, but recently they started creating packets with all the supplements you need for the morning, and packets with the supplements you need for the evening.

The packs still have the vitamins I listed above, but also have some other supplements. So, I am testing them out for two months.

If you're interested in seeing what all is in the morning and evening packets, you can find that at the link below.

^ That is not an affiliate link and I get nothing if you go check it out. Just sharing this as it has made taking vitamins and supplements easier for me.

🤑 Wealth Thought of The Week: The impact of EIP-1559 after 1-week!

Exactly one week ago the Ethereum Network upgraded. It was a software upgrade that changed the way that fees were handled. I explain this in some detail in the section below (that I shared last week).

For every transaction on the Ethereum Network, a small fee paid in ETH is required. EIP-1559 destroys a chunk of that fee, removing it from existence. This reduces the overall supply.

How much ETH has been burned in the last week? A LOT!

My favorite website for watching the ETH 🔥 is ultrasound.money.

image

You can see how much ETH has been burned in the last hour, day, week, month, and all time.

So far, in the last week over 27,100 ETH has been destroyed, which sounds crazy until you see that the average amount of ETH burned per minute is 3.16 ETH!

Right now with the ETH price being $3,222 that equates to almost $87 Million being destroyed.

Of course, we have seen what this has done to the price of ETH. In the past week, the price has increased by over 28% as of this morning.

image

How much of this price movement has been due to hype around EIP-1559 and how much has been due to the deflationary pressure that EIP-1559 has put on the price of ETH?

It's too early to tell.

But on average 3 ETH are removed from existence every minute. The total supply of ETH is not going to ever increase at the rate it did up until August 3rd, 2021 ever again.

In the coming years the overall supply of ETH will likely plateau and then start to go down.

(From last week) Ethereum's EIP-1559 is happening today

If you still don't know what EIP-1559 is, there is an amazing article on it that you can read here.

EIP-1559 stands for "Ethereum Improvement Proposal 1559" and is basically a major software upgrade to the entire Ethereum blockchain.

It is packaged into what is called the "London Hard Fork." When you upgrade an entire blockchain, you are basically replacing the old blockchain with the new one, and leaving the old one behind.

Anyway, the benefits of EIP-1559 are pretty big. Starting after the upgrade, a small portion of every transaction fee (which is ETH) will be permanently "burned" from existence.

There are millions of transactions on the Ethereum network, and the network runs 24/7 365 days a year, forever. That means that little by little, more and more ETH will be removed from the supply available to be bought.

When supply decreases, and demand increases, that causes prices to go up. It's basic economics. It's the same reason Pokemon Cards and Beanie Babies were so expensive when they were popular (in demand).

I expect the ETH price change to be a gradual process, but we might see some really large jumps in the price of ETH over the next few weeks as people realize this and rush to buy more ETH. Maybe.

If you are operating under the Wise Owl model, then you don't need to do anything different.

  • Continue buying the crypto you like every week.
  • Stake the crypto you can stake
  • Lend the crypto you can lend (via BlockFi)
  • Hold

That is all folks.

Quote/Meme of the week:

The green wave is upon us.

The price of ETH is likely not going to go below $2,000 ever again.

Who knows what the future holds.

Have a great week!

This concludes our issue this week, I hope it gave you some perspective or injected a little motivation into your life!

If it helped, let me know! I read every newsletter response I receive, and I absolutely love hearing from all of you. This newsletter is for you, so I need your help to make it as great as possible.

If you'd like to show me some love for writing all this free stuff, you can always buy me a coffee.

You can find the podcast easily on the internet, but I am linking to episode 1 on Spotify for your convenience.

Buy your first ETH or BTC:

  • On Coinbase - this is the easiest starting place for the newest beginners
  • On Gemini - Another great option founded by the Winklevoss brothers. They are based out of New York.
  • On Kraken - Kraken has a bit of a harder user interface, but they already have ETH staking enabled with the push of a single button.

Earn interest on your crypto

  • BlockFi - Currently, you can earn 4% interest on BTC, 4% interest on ETH, and a whopping 7.5% on stable coins like USDC. Use the referral code b09f24fd to support the newsletter.

Other tools:

  • Argent Wallet - This is the best mobile wallet for Ethereum, Defi, and all things on the Ethereum network, including staking. They even have plans to implement Layer 2 to remove network fees.
  • Ethhub - this is a weekly newsletter that lists out all the interesting news, articles, and tweets that have happened in Crypto that week. It's free and awesome.
