🦉 WoW #98 - Rebuild Your Life 🦉

Dec 08, 2021 7:57 pm

Happy Wednesday, Wise Owl Nation!

We are now firmly entrenched in the final month of the year.

In the next few weeks, I will start writing more about my goals for 2022 and how I am thinking about them ahead of time.

But for now, I want to share with you some of my thoughts around life that have been rattling around inside my brain for the last week or two.

I had a conversation with an old friend, someone I hadn't spoken to in a while about what they had been up to in the past several years. Most of their answer was a normal/typical response, but part of their answer was very much not typical.

They said that they had recently realized how much of their daily life revolved around things they didn't actually like. For whatever reason, they had let the hobbies, activities, etc of their loved ones dictate how they spent their time.

This person is now in the process of rebuilding their life, and I found that concept to be extremely compelling, especially as we near the end of another tumultuous year of lockdowns, vaccine mandates, and supply chain shortages.

So I'm going to start writing about it.

Let's get into it.

You can find all past issues (including this one) here.

🧠 Wisdom Tip(s) of The Week: (Re)build your life on your own terms

How much of your daily life is dictated by you?

More specifically, are the things you do everyday things that you actually want to be doing?

Maybe the answer is yes, but if I had to guess the answer is probably no.

For me, it is definitely a no.

If you're unsure, ask yourself the following questions:

How would you spend an average day if you could build one for yourself?

Where would you wake up?

What time would you wake up?

How would that day start?

What would you do throughout the day?

Who would you spend it with?

How would you end that day?

I find that over time I need to ask myself some of these questions because I have a tendency to let my days get away from me. As it turns out, I have an intermittent past of being a people pleaser.

Not always, but I have noticed a cycle in my life that leads towards people pleasing if I don't force myself to be mindful.

James Clear, one of my favorite writer's recently shared this jarring bit of clarity.

"How much could I lose?" is not merely a financial question.
If I make this choice:
- How much time could I lose?
- How much sanity could I lose?
- How much reputation could I lose?
- How much happiness could I lose?
Opportunity cost is about a lot more than money."

^ If you have ever made a choice that led to a loss of time, sanity, reputation, or happiness you should find a way to put those questions in front of your face on a regular basis.

Your time, sanity, reputation, and happiness matters.

If you don't fill your own cup first, you will never be able to fill anyone else's.

So, let's rebuild our lives starting with our days.

If you can craft an ideal day that is repeatable, an ideal week then becomes possible. If you can repeat that ideal week, then an ideal month becomes possible.

This isn't a simple or easy process, since most of what you will be doing at first is defending your ideal day from your old habits, confused friends, etc.

But this is important. The sooner you can build and then actually live an ideal day, the more of your life you earn back.

Homework

Spend the next week thinking about what an ideal day for you looks like.

It's okay if you have a day job that you don't like, but is absolutely mandatory.

Think about the start and end of your day.

These are two parts of your day that you have 100% control over.

Think about the foods you should be eating.

The hobbies you want to be doing.

The people you want to be around.

Build out a concept for your ideal day.

I'll do the same.

Ethereum Stats:

Total ETH burned - 1.15 Million ETH (or $5 + billion!!)

ETH burned in the last week - 67,000 ETH !!!! 😱

Avg ETH burn per minute (all-time) - 6.36 ETH/min

My favorite website for watching the ETH 🔥 is ultrasound.money.

The Bankless Podcast: This is a link to the bankless podcast on Spotify. Start from the very beginning and learn why I am so positive about the power of Crypto and Ethereum in particular. You can find the podcast easily on the internet, but I am linking to episode 1 on Spotify for your convenience.

Buy your first ETH or BTC:

  • On Coinbase - this is the easiest starting place for the newest beginners
  • On Gemini - Another great option founded by the Winklevoss brothers. They are based out of New York.
  • On Kraken - Kraken has a bit of a harder user interface, but they already have ETH staking enabled with the push of a single button.

Earn interest on your crypto

  • BlockFi - Currently, you can earn 4.5% interest on BTC, 5% interest on ETH, and a whopping 8.25% on stable coins like USDC. Use the referral code b09f24fd to support the newsletter.

Other tools:

  • Argent Wallet - This is the best mobile wallet for Ethereum, Defi, and all things on the Ethereum network, including staking. They even have plans to implement Layer 2 to remove network fees.
  • Ethhub - this is a weekly newsletter that lists out all the interesting news, articles, and tweets that have happened in Crypto that week. It's free and awesome.
  • Ethdashboard - A simple dashboard to look at various metrics in the ethereum space. I mainly use this as a quick tool to check ETH gas fees.
  • Cointracker - this is one of the better tools for tracking all of your various crypto across all of the various wallets, exchanges, etc. You can also use them to do your crypto taxes each year.
  • Metamask - this is a crypto wallet that you can access from your browser and allows you to easily interact with blockchain apps online.
