Wise Owl Wednesday #24 - Authenticity

Jul 08, 2020 6:55 pm

Happy Wednesday, Wise Owl Nation.

I am writing this week's issue from my cell phone, so expect a lot less words in this issue.

Why write from my phone?

Well my internet has been out for over 30 hours now.

It's apparently a neighborhood wide outage, and my internet provider is "trying" to get the service back.

For some reason my phone won't tether to my desktop computer, so here I sit, tapping these words to you on my phone.

It's worth it though, because this is the deal we've made.

You subscribed to me because I've promised to send you a valuable email every Wednesday.

The topic this week is authenticity, one of the most important aspects a person can cultivate. Think about it, your favorite people are the ones that are the most authentic.

Let's get into it.

You can find all past issues (including this one) here.

Wisdom Tip of the Week: Life is easier when you are yourself

Life is easier when you allow the real you to exist.

And this week it is much easier for me to share quotes on authenticity from Brene Brown, who is much better at wordsmithing than I am.

“To be authentic, we must cultivate the courage to be imperfect — and vulnerable. We have to believe that we are fundamentally worthy of love and acceptance, just as we are. I’ve learned that there is no better way to invite more grace, gratitude and joy into our lives than by mindfully practicing authenticity.”
— Brene Brown

Brene Brown is one of the foremost thinkers and teachers on authenticity and vulnerability. She has written a lot of really impactful books. You can find them here, if you're interested.

And here's another. She really is awesome.

"Authenticity is a collection of choices that we have to make every day. It's about the choice to show up and be real. The choice to be honest. The choice to let our true selves be seen."
— Brené Brown

Be yourself to be happy. Don't suppress who you are. Cultivate Existence

Health Tip of the Week: Bad Nutrition Advice

It's so damn hard to be healthy in 2020.

Social Media has created a platform for every "good-looking-person" to preach fitness and nutrition.

You know who I don't want to hear about fitness and nutrition from?

Someone who has always been in shape.

I want to read about fitness and nutrition from someone who started unfit and discovered how to get healthy, then actually took action and got healthy!

A few names come to mind when I think about authentic influencers in the space of health and fitness:

  • Layne Norton - A PhD in Nutrition with a great bullshit detecter
  • Carter Good - Great advice, was once overweight but overcame that to help others
  • Sohee Lee - She was a protege of Layne Norton, PhD student, hilarious, great fitness advice
  • David Goggins - has overcome more pain and suffering than anyone I know. Former Navy Seal, Ultra-marathoner, and world record holder for most pull-ups in a day.

These folks are as authentic as it comes. Hell, Layne Norton spends a lot of time calling out fitness and nutrition "experts" that try to con people online. He's worth an instagram follow just for that!

Wealth Tip of the Week: Authentic Value vs Fake Value

There are certain people I go to when I need information on specific topics.

When I need information on how politics works, I talk to my friend Patrick.

When I need information on video, lighting, or productivity, I talk to my friends Devin and Kendra.

When other people need book recommendations or Cryptocurrency advice, they come talk to me.

Why? Because in those areas, we are ridiculously passionate, and that passion is obvious.

Information is more valuable when it comes from an authentic source.

Let me give you an example of the opposite.

How many of you have friends that joined a multi-level marketing company then tried to shame you into buying what they were selling? It's one of the most awkward and forced interactions I've ever been a part of. Why? It's not authentic. It's extremely difficult to convince others to do anything, much less spend their money on some dumb product they weren't looking for.

I've been on both sides of that coin. I've tried to sell shit I didn't care about to friends, and have had friends try to sell to me they don't care about.

When money is the only motivator, authenticity dies.

Money does not equal value.

Money can be exchanged for value.

It can store value, but it does not equal value.

If you want to generate wealth, provide disproportionate authentic value.
