Wise Owl Wednesday #17 - Routines

May 20, 2020 5:40 pm

Happy Wednesday, Wise Owl Nation.

Let's talk about routines.

Most of us have been quarantine for months now.

I can say with absolute certainty that I would be going crazy right now if I did not do my daily morning and evening routine.

This newsletter, for example, would probably not still be a consistent part of your Wednesday morning if I didn't stick to the routines that keep me productive, healthy, and focused.

So today's newsletter is focused around using routines to make yourself wiser, healthier, and wealthier.

I want to hear from you! Once you read through today's issue let me know what routines you are going to start, or what routines you live and die by.

You can find all past issues (including this one) here.

Quote of the week:

Last week I wrote about the value of consistency.

A little bit of effort everyday can build empires over the long term.

Daily routines are simply a productive sequence of events done repeatedly.

Routines help you get shit done every day without burning yourself out.

Not only can anyone start and maintain a routine, it is actually much easier to do so then to live your life like a chaotic mess. Trust me, I've excelled at both ends of the spectrum.

This is why the secret of your future is hidden in your routine.

Tips or Tools of the week: Wisdom, Health and Wealth

Each week I share either three tips or three tools that will help you become wiser, healthier, and wealthier.

Wisdom tip of the week: Stop the chaos by controlling your morning

There are two parts of every day that you can control. The start and the finish.

Darren Hardy calls these two times of day your "daily book ends."

This is why many people have morning and evening routines!

These routines allow you to start and end your day exactly the way you want to.

You can set the tone for your entire day with a strong morning routine.

My current morning routine is simple, but extremely effective.

  • Wake up and make coffee
  • Sit in my office and plan out my day
  • Meditate for 10 minutes
  • Stretch
  • Go for a 30 minute walk while listening to an audio book
  • Spend some time writing what I learned from the audio book

And that is it! The entire routine takes around 60-80 minutes but in that time I get so much done.

Health tip of the week: Routines empower sleep

Morning routines are amazing for having an awesome day, but evening routines are where the magic happens. Evening routines help you have awesome sleep, and as we should all know by now after reading half of "Why We Sleep," that sleep is the number one health, wealth, and wisdom booster in the known world.

My evening routine is designed around maximizing my sleep.

I need this routine or I stay up too late, get poor sleep, and have a terrible time.

At 8 pm I do everything I can to stop staring at blue light. I use the night modes on all of my devices, and am getting close to buying some blue light blocking glasses. This is important because it is telling my body that it's dark outside, and it's time to produce melatonin.

I turn the air conditioning to 68 degrees at 9 pm automatically via my Nest thermostat. My get free electricity from 9 pm to 9 am, so I crank the air down to 68 because humans sleep better when it is colder.

Around 9:30 pm I get into bed and start reading fiction. I do this for a few reasons.

  1. I love fantasy fiction
  2. Reading fiction before bed calms down my mind and relaxes my entire body

I have an Amazon Alexa play Binaural Beats at night to help me stay asleep.

The binaural beats are a type of calming music that helps your brain enter different phases of sleep. Seriously! Clinically researched. Also the music acts as white noise, so that helps too.

By 10 pm I am in bed, comfortable, and extremely drowsy. This allows me to easily fall asleep and get 8 hours of sleep so that I can wake up feeling fresh at 5:30 - 6:00 am.

Wealth tip of the week: routines for all areas of wealth

Routines and building wealth go hand in hand. You can use routines to spend less money, make more money, pay off debt, and invest. I'll give examples of each.

A routine for spending less - Back in the days when I could go to a restaurant to eat, I would make it a habit of asking the wait staff to put half of my meal in a to-go container.

This had the added benefits of reducing my portion size, AND providing me another meal.

Intermittent fasting is also technically a routine that allows you to skip one meal a day. That is food you don't have to pay for. /shrug

A routing for paying off debt - Debt sucks. I hate it and I don't like carrying it. To pay off my student loans I used a secondary checking account as my "loan payoff war-chest." Every spare dollar I had went into that war-chest each month. My loan minimums were automatically paid from that account.

Then after all of the minimums were paid would dump all of my remaining war-chest into the loan I was at war with.

Over 4-years I defeated $50,000 in loans. In all of that time I never reduced the amount of money I pumped into that war-chest. Even when smaller loans were paid off, the war wasn't over, so I never stopped funding the war-chest.

A routine for earning more - Most of us have day-jobs with bosses we report to. A little trick for earning more at work. Keep track of all of your successes throughout the year. Each quarter send them to your boss.

Don't wait until the end of the year to remind them of your value. Then before your final performance review, consolidate all the emails you sent them from each quarter and send them a comprehensive review of your contributions for the year.

They either compensate you appropriately, or you take that same success list you sent your boss and you add it to your resume. Add it to your resume anyway.

A routine for investing - Dollar-cost averaging, i.e. putting the same amount of money into an investment every month. I use this routine to buy Ethereum every Saturday morning using my Coinbase app.

No matter what the market does, I buy a little piece of my future every week. Automation is kind of cheating with regards to routines, but it still counts.
