Wise Owl Wednesdays - Issue #8

Mar 18, 2020 7:07 pm

Happy Wednesday, Wise Owl Nation!

It's March 18th, 2020 the day after the least exciting Saint Patrick's Day every, and you have made it halfway through the at least the first week of quarantine!

I'm writing from self-quarantine myself, so I am with you all in spirit.

What a turn the world can take in a few short weeks, right?

This weeks issue will focus on that theme of being quarantined, and what you can do with the time you have at home.

Each week we cover a variation of the following:

  • My quote of the week
  • What I am currently reading
  • Tips to make you wise, healthy, and wealthy
  • Any new or relevant Wise Healthy Wealthy articles I think you might enjoy
  • Some ideas for the future of Wise Owl Wednesdays

Quote of the week:

There is more to life than increasing its speed - Mahatma Gandhi

Well isn't that super relatable?

My fiance tells me at least three times a week to "stop rushing."

She's right, I try to cram too many things into a day and end up not enjoying anything.

Most of the world is quarantined now, so this is a great opportunity to slow down, think about what we are doing with our lives, and try to actually enjoy living!

A few weeks ago my book of the week was "Stillness is the Key" by Ryan Holiday because the world we live in is filled with the noise and the constant go go go of progress.

I love progress, but not at the expense of our health and well-being. A balance exists in life that we need to find. It's different for everyone, but this quote is so great because it applies broadly to all situations.

There is more to life than increasing its speed.

Current Reads - Keep Going by Austin Kleon

I've featured Austin's books before.

This addition was published almost one-year ago and drew my attention over the last few days as I have sat in my office working.

Sometimes I worry that the content that I create is not good enough, which might be true, but the thought does nothing but drain my energy.

This thought is commonly known as impostor syndrome, and many people who create or find themselves in a position they are uncomfortable in find themselves experiencing this.

This book will help you slow down so you can always keep going, in good times and bad.

Why this book is awesome:

I always love the visuals and quotes sprinkled throughout the pages of wisdom in these books. They are formatted so well. The constant shift in contrast from words on the page to engaging visuals keeps my ADHD brain locked in.

Plus, the chapter titles alone are amazing:

  1. Everyday is groundhog day
  2. Build a bliss station
  3. Forget the noun, do the verb
  4. Make gifts
  5. The ordinary + extra attention = the extraordinary
  6. Slay the art monsters
  7. You are allowed to change your mind
  8. When in doubt, tidy up
  9. Demons hate fresh air
  10. Plant your garden

Tips or Tools of the week: Wisdom, Health or Wealth

Each week I share either three tips or three tools that will help you become wiser, healthier, and wealthier.

Wisdom tip of the week: Acquire knowledge and improve

You are at home now for the foreseeable future. For some of you this means dealing with wild kids all day long while you struggle to work. For others it means trying to fill the time so you don't die from boredom.

Either way, there is a lot of opportunity to improve yourself and your knowledge through learning.

Read a few books, watch a documentary, get caught up on podcasts, or take an online course in an area you are interested in.

If you want to level up your skills and learn new tools the folks over at Digital Marketer just made their entire portfolio of courses FREE for at least the rest of March.

You can now take courses that normally cost thousands of dollars each for free in the following areas:

  • Copywriting
  • Content Marketing
  • Paid Traffic
  • E-commerce Marketing
  • Conversion Funnels
  • Optimization & Testing
  • Social & Community
  • Search Marketing
  • Email Marketing
  • Community Management
  • Analytics and Data

All of these skills are doable from home remotely. You could conceivably learn a skill during this quarantine that allows you to switch careers! I know a few of my readers are hurting right now because their work is in the service industry, and they aren't able to make money.

This is a chance to change that. If you want access to super expensive and valuable courses on marketing, click right here.

Health tip of the week: Wake up early

When a lot of people work from home, they tend to over communicate with each other digitally.

The opportunities for quiet become less and less, especially if you have kids to look after during the day.

How do I combat this? I wake up hours before everyone else so I can have some damn peace and quiet.

A lot of people stay up late, so I've found that I still get distracted by incoming messages and other distractions.

Few people wake up really early, and those that do are like me, they want to be left alone during their precious time of solitude.

I always feel like I have better days when I successfully wake up early and get that time to myself.

Don't let a long term work from home situation lull you into sleeping in. That will lead to you waking up everyday in a panic! Not healthy at all.

Just give it a try. Tomorrow try to wake up at least 15 minutes earlier than usual so you can have that time for yourself. Then the day after tomorrow, wake up another 15 minutes earlier. Build on that until you have the free time you deserve.

Wealth tip of the week: Dollar-cost average

The stock market, crypto market, etc have been all over the place the last few weeks.

Will they continue to go down? How about up?

No one knows. It's impossible to know. You get around this by doing something called "dollar cost averaging."

This just means that you put the same amount of money in at the same time interval.

For example - you invest $25 each week. Or you just invest the entire $100 at the beginning of each month.

This allows you to take emotions and timing out of investing, and focus on other things. Dollar cost averaging will allow you to catch the market when it is down, and when it is up.

New or Relevant Articles

Every week I publish new articles on Medium.

Not every article I write will pertain to wisdom, health, and wealth, but most will!

New or relevant articles I publish will be included here.

A Few Newsletter Ideas I am Pondering

I am always thinking about ways to make this newsletter more valuable to all of you. I want it to be, at the very least, the one email you look forward to opening each week.

  • A giveaway of all the books I have recommended here on Wise Owl Wednesday at the end of March
  • A section on Cryptocurrency called the "Crypto Corner"
  • A video or Audio component of Wise Owl Wednesdays for those of you who want to listen to what the newsletter says or here my riff on various sections.
  • A more personal look into my journey and what I am experimenting with right now including an open look into my habits, struggles, finances, etc.

What do you think about these ideas? Respond to this email and let me know.
