Wise Owl Wednesdays - Issue #10

Apr 01, 2020 7:26 pm

Happy Wednesday, Wise Owl Nation.

It's April 1st, 2020 also known as April Fools day!

You've made it through the Age of March, and can now move on to my favorite month of the year, April!

A special welcome to the hundreds of you that just joined this newsletter via the giveaway.

Welcome! This is a weekly email I send out to help us all become wiser, healthier and wealthier. You can find all past issues (including this one) here.

This week brings a few changes to the newsletter - for the better I hope.

I noticed (after writing it) that the last few newsletters were getting really long. Which isn't inherently bad, since the content is of high quality, but it isn't what I had envisioned for Wise Owl Wednesdays.

I want this newsletter to be a small, quick burst of wisdom or knowledge you can take into each week.

So, to try and drive a little closer towards that goal I will be testing a few different things.

Let me know how this goes

This weeks issue will cover the following:

  • Book Giveaway update
  • The quote of the week
  • Our book of the month
  • Tips to make you wise, healthy, and wealthy in times like this
  • Your homework this week

Book Giveaway Update:

Last Friday March 27th I launched the first Wise Owl Wednesday Quarterly giveaway.

We've gone over many books this first quarter and I want to buy 8 of you the one book you most want to read.

If you haven't entered yet, or want to see your entrance page you can do so here.

Wow! This giveaway has already received several hundred entrants and blown by my early goals for outreach.

The giveaway closes a week from today, the night of April 8th.

I will announce the 8 winners on Thursday morning, April 9th, which happens to be my 30th birthday.

Quote of the week:

Man, if the world didn't have enough to worry about regarding their health!

Now it looks like quite a lot of people are starting to realize how much worse the economy is becoming.

I like this quote for this week because a lot of you are worried about money. A lot of you wish you knew more about money. Many of you have actually reached out to me to get my opinion.

Some of you are even thinking about buying a house!!! (Don't do it right now pleeease)

If you want money to stop costing so much of your time, happiness, or sanity then read on. I am changing the format of the book section to better help readers get more out of the content there

Book Of The Month

The Update To This Section

I will make this brief so we can get into the book.

This section will now feature one book for the entire month.

Why? So I can go in depth into the book throughout the month allowing you get more knowledge and takeaways.

So this is the format:

Week 1 - Introduce new book, talk about why it's great

Week 2 - Review the first third of the book and give takeaways

Week 3 - Review the second third of the book and give takeaways

Week 4 - Review the last third of the book and give takeaways.

Then I will create a comprehensive book review from the past months discussions!

Book Of The Month for April - I Will Teach You To Be Rich by Ramit Sethi (2nd Edition)

image

Our first book of the month has to be money related. Too many people are scared right now about their finances.

So we are going to start with the personal finance book that I feel best works in both bad economies and good. Hell the original version of this book was released in March of 2009, in the depths of the last recession, and became an instant NYT best seller!!

Why this book is awesome

The first chapter will immediately save most of you money. It involves getting your credit card providers to stop being assholes. If you read chapter 1 and implement what it teaches, you will save money, and your credit score will improve.

That's what I like - a book that kicks off with actionable advice that can instantly save you $$.

This month we are going to cover the following via Ramit's book:

Next Week: April 8

  • Chapter 1 - Optimize Credit Cards
  • Chapter 2 - Beat the Banks
  • Chapter 3 - Get Ready to Invest

Week 3 - April 15

  • Chapter 4 - Conscious Spending
  • Chapter 5 - Save While Sleeping
  • Chapter 6 - The Myth of Financial Expertise

Week 4 - April 22

  • Chapter 7 - Investing Isn't Only For Rich People
  • Chapter 8 - How to Maintain and Grow Your System
  • Chapter 9 - A Rich Life

Your homework this week is to get the book! Make sure you get the second edition and not the first. He released a revised and updated version last year. Links to get the book are below.

Tips or Tools of the week: Wisdom, Health or Wealth

Each week I share either three tips or three tools that will help you become wiser, healthier, and wealthier.

Wisdom tip of the week: Beware of April fools pranks

Last year my favorite author released a book schedule for my favorite series. A lot of people believed it. Did I believe it? No comment. Basically new books should have come out by now according to that fake schedule.

I'm still sad inside.

Beware my friends. Beware.

Health tip of the week: You can DIY your own anti-viral mask if you want to level up your mask game

I found this cool mask DIY guide on twitter. This will give you an anti-viral mask you can wear out an about. Masks are in fashion now people, and wearing an anti-viral one will actually do something instead of just making you look like a ninja.

This is not a guide to make a mask from scratch, but I believe doing this guide on a bandana or thick strip of cloth can yield similar benefits when wearing in place of a legit mask. The idea is that doing this to a mask kills viruses instead of just stopping them on the mask.

Stay safe, not sorry.

Wealth tip of the week: Do NOT buy a house right now, but if you want a car? Yeah maybe go for it.

None of our jobs are truly secure. Unless you work at Zoom or Slack right now, our jobs are not 100% secure.

Avoid making huge purchases unless you absolutely have to. Definitely do not buy a house. AirBnB's and landlords are desperate to sell their rental space and are willing to take insane deals. Look there first if you need a new place. Hell, maybe work with an AirBnB host for a longer term contract.

As for a car?

Fun fact - I used to work for General Motors.

I have friends that still work there.

GM, Ford, and all other automotive manufacturers are not making cars right now. You can't tell yet, but in a few months the world will run out of new cars.

There are some ridiculous deals on cars out there if you take the time to look. So if you need a car for any reason, I recommend looking around for a used vehicle. People are desperate to keep selling, and in several months I predict you won't be able to find many deals.

If you don't need a new car, don't spend your money! Save it.
