The One Who Gets The Crown

The morning would be peaceful and relaxing if not for the tension in the air as Valentino and I wait for Sloane to end our anticipation. Not like I have a chance.

Although Valentino defers a lot of the sweet romance planning to me, he doesn’t do it because he’s incapable, as evidenced last night. The man just doesn’t know how to plan on a small scale. I can’t be mad at him, though.

Unlike when it was my night to plan, where I didn’t include him, for him, my presence was always a given. Right now, I’m waiting to hear what I know to be true. Valentino won the title.

Sloane looks from me to Valentino, a frown crinkling her brow. “Can we not do this right now?”

“Principessa…”

“My water just broke and—“

Valentino jumps up, overturning his chair.

“Calm down,” I reassure everyone. “How far are your contractions?”

Sloane looks away. Guilt laces her voice as she signs and mutters, “Every four minutes.”

It’s my turn to flip my chair as I stand. “How long?”

“A while.”

“Sloane,” Valentino grits. “Don’t lie to us. You know precisely when you started feeling contractions.”

She glares at us. “I thought they were Braxton Hicks. I have a high pain tolerance, so I was dealing with it. But then, I’d like to repeat this since you obviously didn’t hear me the first time, my water broke!”

Valentino and I stare at each other in silence before turning to Sloane again.

“Oh my God!” Sloane says in disgust. “You’re a doctor, Tácito. Act like one.” She stands, holding her belly.

She’s right. All of a sudden, my training kicks in, and I check her pulse. “Your pulse is normal, good. Do you feel up to changing while I get the go-bag?”

Valentino and I take a go-bag with us everywhere. When Sloane is on her own, her staff ensures she has one so we are always ready to go.

Sloane rushes to the bedroom. “Yes. I refuse to show up to the hospital going commando.”

Valentino and I are on her heels.

“Here’s a change of clothes.” I toss everyones garments on the bed, thankful I packed our bags before coming to the hotel.

We quickly dress and leave the room in disarray to pile into my car. By the time I pull out of the hotel parking lot, police cars blaring their sirens await us to pull onto the street.

I glance at Valentino in the rear-view mirror while holds our wife in his arms and massages her belly.

Sloane twists around to see the police cars behind, on our sides, and in front of us. “Valentino, how did you arrange a police escort so fast?”

“They’ve been on-call for weeks. Or did you think I would let an inconvenience like traffic delay you and our child from the care you need?” He whispers something into her ear, but my view of his lips is blocked from the angle of his head.

I turn my attention to the road. The trip to the hospital is the fastest I’ve ever driven, aided by green lights all the way and the sirens diverting drivers to clear our path. If Valentino ever retires or isn’t reelected in the future, I’ll have a difficult time readjusting to normal life.

I pull up to Douglas Memorial Hospital’s valet and we exit the car. Sloane chose DMH although I don’t have privileges here, and I don’t blame her. DMH is a level one trauma center for pediatrics and maternal medicine.

As if watching from outside my body, I observe our calm as we enter the hospital. That all disappears when Sloane responds to the intake official that her contractions are now two minutes apart.

“Where the hell is Dr. Abdulla?” Valentino demands.

Sloane pats his arm. “Calm down. She has to contend with morning traffic like everyone else.”

Valentino arches his brow while maintaining his silence.

I shake my head. “She has a police escort as well?”

“I don’t understand why you two are acting as if I’m a stranger. Of course, she has a goddamn escort.”

Blurb:

We were star-crossed lovers like Romeo and Juliet from two warring families.

And like Romeo, I destroyed our love when I killed someone near and dear to her heart.

Now, it’s been seven years, and I’ve risen to power with no queen to share my throne.

Against her will, she’s promised to me because it is her family whose empire needs protection.

She hates me.

She hates who I was and who I have become.

She also hates that my touch still thrills her to the core.

Before I make her my bride, she will remember that she was once my Juliet and I, her Romeo.

This time, we will live happily ever after.

Even if it kills us.
