Skills alone won’t get you hired

You showed your best work.

You told your story.

You nailed the interview.

But still no offer.

Why?

Here’s what most candidates miss:

Hiring isn’t just about design skills.

It’s about fit.

As a hiring manager, I always look at 3 types of fit:

1. Job fit

Can you do the job?

• Do you meet the requirements?

• Do your case studies show business impact, not just screens?

• Do you have the functional skills we need—research, execution, delivery?

This gets you into the interview.

But it’s not enough to get the offer.

2. Mindset fit

Can you grow in the role?

• Do you show a learning mindset?

• Do you reflect on mistakes and share lessons?

• Do you take feedback well?

I use the CARL method when coaching candidates:

• Context

• Action

• Result

• Learning

That last part? It matters.

Because no one wants to hire someone they can’t coach.

3. Cultural fit

Do I want to work with you?

This one’s trickier.

It’s about vibe. Energy. Chemistry.

It’s:

• “Would I enjoy working with you?”

• “Would the team enjoy collaborating with you?”

• “Would you thrive in our mission, values, pace?”

I’ve had team members ask candidates,

“What’s your go-to drink at the bar?”

Sounds silly. But it’s not about the drink.

It’s about the vibe.

If you don’t leave the team with a feeling,

you won’t leave with an offer.

So if you’re wondering why you’re getting interviews but no offers…

Check for fit.

Because being “good” at design isn’t enough anymore.

You need to be:

• A good match for the work

• A good learner for the journey

• A good human to work with

I shared more on this in a short chat with Christopher Nguyen about interview challenges, take-home assignments, and how hiring managers really evaluate candidates.
