Stop Waiting to Be Crowned a UX Leader

Feb 01, 2025 12:41 am

A lot of mid-senior UXers tell me:

🗣️ “I want to lead a team.”

🗣️ “I’m ready for a senior role.”

🗣️ “I want to have more impact.”

But in the same breath, they also say:

❌ “I don’t have enough experience.”

❌ “I don’t feel ready.”

❌ “I need someone to give me a leadership role first.”

That’s the problem.

You don’t need permission to lead.

You need to start acting like the leader you say you want to be.

Here’s how:

✅ Mentor someone today – Leadership isn’t about a title. It’s about guiding others. If you’ve been in UX for even 2+ years, you already have knowledge that a junior designer would find valuable.

✅ Speak up in meetings – Stop waiting for an invite to “the leadership table.” If you see a problem in your team or company, propose a solution. Influence starts with taking initiative.

✅ Build a strategic network – Senior roles aren’t just about technical skills. They’re about relationships. Are hiring managers, design directors, and industry peers aware of your expertise? If not, start connecting.

Most designers wait to be promoted into leadership.

The smart ones start acting like leaders first—then get the promotion.

This is what we teach inside UX Careerpreneurs.

Want to step into your leadership potential now instead of waiting for permission?
