If you’re sick of updating your portfolio

Jan 05, 2026 11:06 am

You’re probably tired.

Not tired like “I need a break.”

Tired like “I don’t know what else to fix.”

You’ve updated your portfolio.

Then updated it again.

Then trimmed it.

Then rewrote the case study.

Still no offer.

At some point, the question creeps in quietly:

“Is this even the right industry for me anymore?”

Here’s what most experienced designers don’t get told.

Hiring decisions are rarely made by comparing portfolios side by side.

They’re made through trust, familiarity, and perceived risk.

Portfolios help.

They just don’t do the heavy lifting people think they do.

That’s why strong designers keep getting to late rounds and still miss out.

They’re evaluated as unknowns, not as safe bets.

What actually changes things is when:

→ the right people know who you are

→ you’re seen in context, not cold

→ you show intent before a role opens

That’s when conversations start.

That’s when the tone shifts.

That’s when you stop feeling invisible.

This is the work I do with clients 1-on-1.

Not more applications.

Not more polishing.

But clarity, targeted conversations, and positioning that hiring managers trust.

If you’ve been doing “all the right things” and still feel stuck, that’s usually the sign you’re playing the wrong part of the game.

I’m opening a small number of private 1-on-1 spots right now.
