Let’s be real:

Most designers don’t fail interviews because of skill.

They fail because of doubt.

They second-guess their story.

But here’s the thing:

You don’t need to feel confident to sound confident.

You just need to borrow belief.

Let me show you how.

When I first started as a UX career coach…

I was stuck in my own head for almost 7 years.

I knew I had experience.

I knew I had value to give.

But I kept wondering:

“Who am I to do this?”

“What if I fail publicly?”

“What if I ruin someone’s career?”

It was paralyzing.

Until one day I sat down and wrote out a simple list:

My top 10 limiting beliefs.

I listed every fear. Every self-doubt. Every voice in my head saying “you can’t.”

Then next to each one, I asked myself:

“Why is this NOT true?”

That’s it.

And that cracked it open for me.

Here’s an example:

Limiting belief: “I’m not qualified to be a coach.”

Counter: “I’ve coached junior designers at work for years. They come back and thank me. They’ve grown. I’m not starting from zero.”

Limiting belief: “What if I mess up someone’s career?”

Counter: “My job is to guide, not control. I don’t promise success. I promise partnership.”

Limiting belief: “What if I fail?”

Counter: “I’ve failed before and I’m still here. Failure is part of growth.”

I kept that sheet with me.

I read it every time I felt shaky.

It reminded me:

You’ve done the work.

You’ve earned your shot.

Let’s go.

That’s how I borrowed belief — from my past proof, until I built real confidence.

You can do this too.

Here’s how to start:

1. Write down the top 5-10 beliefs holding you back in your job hunt

2. Ask: “Why is this not true?”

3. Pull real examples, data, feedback, proof

4. Keep it close — and read it before every interview

Over time, that borrowed belief becomes conviction.

And conviction is what hiring panels buy.
