Don’t settle for the first offer

Ever accepted a job offer and later found out you could’ve asked for more?

It’s that sinking feeling of realizing you undersold yourself — all because you didn’t have the right negotiation strategy.

You’re not alone. Most UX designers walk into salary negotiations feeling like they have no leverage.

They believe that the first offer is the best they’ll get. But here’s the truth:

You’re likely leaving $15K–$30K on the table.

Here’s how to flip the script:

→ Assess the initial offer. Take a breath. Research what others in similar roles are making and position yourself accordingly.

→ Address employer concerns. They’re not just thinking about budget; they’re weighing risk. Show them why you’re a low-risk, high-reward hire.

→ Present your value. Connect the dots between your previous wins and their biggest pain points. Make them see the ROI of paying you more.

Most designers think negotiation is confrontational. But the reality? It’s a conversation, not a battle.

If you don’t ask, the answer is always no.

Which step are you skipping?
