Your portfolio isn’t why you’re stuck

I hear this a lot: “I keep rewriting my resume and portfolio, but nothing moves.”
I get it. Fixing the thing you can see feels safe. But the jam happens before anyone opens your link.
Here’s how most hires actually start:
1️⃣ The manager asks the team: “Who do we trust?”
2️⃣ They ask friends: “Got someone good?”
3️⃣ Only then do they check the pile.
Your portfolio lives in step 3. Trust lives in steps 1 and 2.
A simple picture: polishing a billboard in the desert. You can kerning every headline. If no road leads to it, no one sees it. The road is relationships and referrals. The billboard is your portfolio.
Quick math: you apply to 100 roles, hear back from 1–2. That’s normal for the front door. A warm intro gets 20–30 out of 100 to reply. Same you. Same work. Different path.
From the hiring seat, the questions are blunt:
→ Can I trust this person to think clearly?
→ Will they reduce my risk and my time?
→ Who already vouches for them?
That’s why messy portfolios can still win. The manager isn’t grading polish. They’re scanning for signal.
Use this lens: Access > Assets.
Assets = resume, portfolio, case studies.
Access = people who open doors for you.
When access is high, assets get read with care. When access is low, even great assets get skimmed and skipped.
So what creates access? Backdoor signals that are small, specific, and useful:
→ A one-page Trojan Horse teardown showing one problem and one improvement for a target product.
→ A 60-second Loom walking through a single insight tied to a business outcome.
→ A short DM that names a concrete pain and asks one sharp question.
Concrete example you can try this week:
1️⃣ Pick 10 target teams.
2️⃣ For 3 of them, make a one-page “before/after” on a real UX snag. No big deck. One page.
3️⃣ Send it to the right manager with a single line: “If you were me, would you test A or B first to move X metric?”
You’re not begging for a job. You’re starting a work-shaped conversation. That’s what earns a reply.
A coaching question to sit with:
👉 If your portfolio was “perfect” tomorrow, who would actually see it, and why would they care?
If you want help building these backdoor signals, I put my templates, scripts, and examples in the Career Creators Library. It’s $25/week. Start when ready, stop when you want.
