Why job boards aren’t broken — but your strategy is

You’re not being ignored because you’re unqualified.
You’re being ignored because you’re entering through the wrong door.
If you’ve been mass applying and hearing crickets…
It’s not because you suck.
It’s because you’re entering the hiring process at the lowest-trust level.
Let me explain:
Most job seekers think this is how hiring works:
→ Apply online
→ Hope to get picked
→ Maybe get an interview
→ Then impress your way to an offer
Seems logical, right?
But that’s not how it works inside real companies.
Ever wonder why…
🔹 You see the same jobs reposted every few weeks?
🔹 Some companies ghost you after the final round?
🔹 Or roles disappear mid-process without explanation?
It’s not just bad luck.
It’s a system issue.
And you’re stuck at the bottom of it.
Here’s what’s really happening behind the scenes:
How hiring managers fill roles (from top to bottom):
- ✅ Internal Transfers
- ✅ Team Referrals
- ✅ Peer Network
- ✅ Talent Pipeline (past candidates)
- ☑️ Recruiters/Agencies
- 🔻 Job Boards
- 🔻 Campus/New Grads
The higher up you go, the faster the hire and the lower the risk.
The lower you go, the slower, more expensive, and riskier the process becomes.
Job seekers usually do the opposite.
They start at Level 6:
→ Spray resumes on LinkedIn, Indeed, etc.
→ Cross their fingers
→ Get ghosted or filtered by ATS
Some might reach Level 5 (recruiters).
A few even get to Level 4 (past interviews).
But almost no one proactively builds visibility at the top:
→ With team members
→ With hiring managers
→ Or with people who already work there
And that’s why they’re invisible to decision-makers.
As a former Head of Design, here’s how I hired:
👀 I asked my team first:
“Who do you know that you’d love to work with again?”
📣 I trusted my peer network:
“Hey — know anyone great looking for a role?”
🧠 I remembered smart candidates from old interviews.
📤 Only if none of that worked… did I post the job publicly.
And even then, the real conversations were happening in backchannels — Slack threads, DMs, WhatsApp.
So when you’re applying online…
You’re not too late.
You’re just entering the race at mile 23.
Are you trying to get noticed…
Or are you making sure you’re known before the job goes live?
