You Want a Mentor? Here’s Why You Don’t Have One Yet.

Mar 27, 2025 12:46 am

“I really want a mentor.”

“I wish I had someone guiding me in my UX career.”

I hear this all the time.

But when I ask, “Who have you reached out to?” … silence.

See the contradiction?

👉 You want mentorship.

👉 But you haven’t asked anyone to mentor you.

What’s stopping you?

For most people, it’s fear.

• Fear of being a burden.

• Fear of rejection.

• Fear that you don’t “deserve” mentorship yet.

But here’s the thing: Mentors don’t just appear. You have to make the first move.

How to Find a Mentor Without Feeling Like a Burden

🚀 1. Be Clear About What You Need

Don’t just say, “Can you mentor me?”—it’s too vague.

Instead:

📌 “I’d love your perspective on breaking into fintech UX.”

📌 “Can I get your advice on structuring my case studies?”

📌 “I admire how you lead UX strategy—could I ask you 2–3 questions?”

Make it specific and easy for them to say yes.

🚀 2. Keep It Low Commitment

Great mentorship starts with small asks.

A single LinkedIn message, a short coffee chat, a quick email exchange.

Over time, if the connection is strong, it naturally evolves.

🚀 3. Offer Mutual Value

Yes, even junior designers have value to offer.

Maybe you can:

✅ Share insights from a different industry

✅ Offer help with a project or research

✅ Simply be an engaged, thoughtful conversation partner

Mentorship is a two-way street. The best relationships are built on mutual respect and exchange.

If you’ve been waiting for a mentor to magically appear, here’s your sign: Take the first step.

And if you want a structured mentorship and job search strategy, that’s exactly what I offer inside UX Careerpreneurs.
