The 1% Strategy That Gets UX Designers Hired

Mar 23, 2025 12:46 am

Most UX designers apply the same way:

Click “Apply.” Attach resume. Wait.

But what if you flipped the whole game?

Here’s the approach I teach in UX Careerpreneurs—a method I call the Dream Formula + MVP Strategy.

It’s more personal, more strategic, and more effective than just blasting resumes.

D – Discover

Start by reflecting on your goals, values, and ideal work environment.

👉 What kind of team do you want?

👉 What problems do you want to solve?

Then, list your Top 10 Dream Companies that align with those values.

R – Reach Out

Now build a “Dream 100” list of people who work at those companies:

• Designers

• Hiring managers

• Recruiters

Send them a personal LinkedIn message or email. Don’t pitch—connect.

Ask for a 15-minute chat to learn about their team and challenges.

E – Execute Your MVP

Instead of applying like everyone else, create a pitch deck (~10 slides):

• Show you understand their company

• Highlight 1–2 potential UX opportunities

• Share how you’d approach them

It’s not a full project. It’s a Minimum Valuable Pitch—just enough to prove you’re serious, strategic, and invested.

A – Ask for Feedback

Send your MVP to the people you spoke with. Ask what they think. Be open to iterate.

This shows coachability—and separates you from 99% of job seekers.

M – Make Referral Requests

If your contact isn’t the decision-maker, ask:

💬 “Would you be open to introducing me to the hiring manager or referring me internally?”

Now you’ve moved from cold applicant to warm referral—with proof of your value.

This strategy takes more work. But that’s why it works.

Most people won’t do it. You will.
