From Industrial Design to Head of Product Design—My Unexpected Journey

Feb 06, 2025 12:46 am

If you asked me back in my polytechnic days where I’d end up, I wouldn’t have guessed here.

Back then, I was an Industrial Design student—more focused on designing physical products than digital experiences. I even served as valedictorian (which, let’s be real, is just a fancy way of saying I was a nerd who loved learning).

Fast forward more than a decade, and my career has taken some unexpected turns:

🎨 Industrial Designer → Solving problems through physical product design

🎓 Design Educator → Teaching and mentoring future designers

🏦 Employee Journey Design Coach (DBS Bank) → Shaping internal experiences for employees

💡 Experience Design Manager (NTUC Income) → Bridging business, design, and user needs

🚀 Head of Product Design (ContactOut) → Leading product strategy and UX for a fast-growing SaaS company

Through it all, one thing has been constant: helping others navigate their careers.

I’ve mentored designers at every stage—from students to mid-career professionals—and I’ve seen how many talented people struggle simply because they don’t know how to position themselves for success.

If you’re feeling stuck, trust me—I’ve been there too.

That’s why I started sharing practical, no-BS advice on UX careers. Because I know firsthand that sometimes, all it takes is the right strategy and a little guidance to unlock new opportunities.

Curious how I made the switch from Industrial Design to UX? Reply with “Journey” and I’ll share more.
