Why you keep applying to jobs that don't excite you

Today's training: Equipment handling and fundamentals. Getting our gear ready, learning the basics before next week's field operations.

Random thought during gear check: Why do we apply to jobs we don't actually want?

I see this constantly. UX professionals applying to any company posting a role, regardless of whether it fits their interests or values.

Here's the uncomfortable truth: When you're desperate, you lower your standards.

When you lower your standards, you end up in roles that drain you.

When you're drained, you perform poorly.

When you perform poorly, you worry about job security.

The cycle continues.

There's a different approach:

Instead of applying everywhere, you identify companies where you'd genuinely thrive.

The Jackpot Formula helps you find these based on:

  1. Personal Passion - What genuinely excites you?
  2. Personal Problems - What challenges have you faced that you want to solve for others?
  3. Professional Challenges - What workplace problems would push you to grow?

When these align, something magical happens.

You become genuinely curious about their challenges instead of desperate for their approval.

Example: If you're passionate about mental health, struggled with anxiety yourself, and want to tackle complex accessibility problems - suddenly companies like Headspace or Calm become obvious targets.

Not because they're hiring, but because you're genuinely interested in their mission.
