Why portfolios stay stuck for years

I hear this a lot from clients:

“I hate working on my portfolio.”

Not because they don’t have good work. But because it feels like a mountain they’ve been putting off for years.

Here’s the hidden truth.

Most designers start in the wrong place. They jump straight into visuals. Fonts, layouts, colors. Picking a template.

It feels productive at first. But then the energy burns out. Weeks go by. The case study copy never gets written. And the portfolio never gets finished.

I’ve been there myself.

And I’ve seen it over and over in my calls. A designer shows me a “draft” they feel embarrassed by. They say, “It’s not really good, but it’s something.”

We copy it into AI. I ask them to walk me through the project out loud. And in minutes, the outline is clear. The copy starts to take shape. The story is there.

And suddenly, it’s no longer a blank canvas. They can see the flow. They can imagine the visuals supporting the story, instead of carrying it.

That’s the shift.

The portfolio is not about the font or the layout. It’s about the story of your work. The visuals should support the words, not replace them.

Start with the words. Then add the design. That’s how you get unstuck.

Next week I’ll be showing you exactly how to do this in the AI Portfolio Workshop.

We’ll take a messy project, strip it down to the story, and rebuild it into a case study hiring managers actually read.
