When your effort is high, but your signal is low

So that same client (i mentioned in yesterday's email) told me something else.

His wife could hear his interviews from the other room.

After one call, she said:

“you didn’t sound that interested.”

That stings.

But she was right.

He admitted it.

One foot still wanted a design job.

One foot wanted out of tech.

So even when he “nailed” the last three final rounds, he still lost.

The feedback was always the same.

“The other person had more experience in this industry.”

Here’s what that usually means.

The hiring manager did not feel safe.

They did not feel certainty.

They did not feel a clear bet.

It’s not about talent.

It’s about signal.

Clarity creates signal.

That’s why I’m running a small 2026 Career Reset starting tomorrow.

It’s for experienced designers who feel stuck, muddy, or invisible.

Even when they’re doing everything.

Details tomorrow.
