Stop showing the hammer. Start showing the house.

In a coaching call last week, I noticed a pattern I’ve seen over and over.

One of my Career Creators was walking me through their resume. Bullet after bullet was packed with details: the tools they used, the methods they followed, the process they applied.

It read like an instruction manual.

I stopped him and asked: “If I were a recruiter scanning this in 10 seconds, what would I take away?”

He thought about it.

The honest answer: probably nothing.

And that’s the trap.

Most job seekers love to explain the how.

They think the process is what proves their value.

But recruiters and hiring managers aren’t scanning for how. They’re scanning for so what.

Impact. Numbers. Outcomes.

Think about it: when you buy a house, you don’t ask the builder which hammer he used. You look at the finished home. The size, the design, the value.

That’s what recruiters want too.

Show the results first.

Then, if they’re interested, you’ll get the chance to explain the how in the interview.

Reflection:

Take a look at your resume right now.

Does it read like a manual… or like a highlight reel of houses you’ve built?
